IF you see my adf.ly numbers you'll know why i talk about this:

March 2016 updated right now downloads:
CHMM2 v.2.6 - 2327 downloads
NASA v.1.4 - 2042 downloads
NASA v.1.3 - 578 downloads

DSP Firmware Dumper - 419 downloads
...
ctrWolfen v.0.8 - 87 downloads
ctrHexenII v.1.1 - 80 downloads

...
Labyrinth 3D v.1.1 - 38 downloads

So is it worth the effort to work on 3D game homebrews? (Labyrinth 3D) NO
Is it worth to work on game engine ports? (ctrWolfen , ctrHexenII) NO
Is it worth to work on something that can enable pirating for third worlder that can't buy for 15 bucks a game or for 1,59 dollars a theme? YES

1) "ad.fly" There's your problem.

2) Using popularity as a basis for doing something is silly, since only a small fraction of the 3DS's install base uses softmods and homebrew in the first place.

not that, i'm fine with that. I want an apology for being lumped in with all the chucklefucks in the video channel creator thread and being called cancer
Dude, you should review your actions ( and your signature ) before asking for an apology ( in which you don't deserve ).

This thread has been derailed enough, let's end this discussion.

It is a well known fact that around 90 % of the guys at gbatemp only cares about piracy. No more, no less. Just piracy. It is also a well known fact that around 90 % of the guys in here can't code a single line. Like @Rinnegatamante says: Many leechers :P

But I thought @MasterFeizz idea of starting a "team" was great! There are a small amount of guys that actually cares a lot about having cool retro games on their devices. The problem is that there are only 4- 5 guys in the 3DS scene that have the skills and interest to port good old games (as of today). So its not an easy task to set up a team. Hopefully it will happen though :)

I like the idea of a team too. Unfortunately, it is hard to coordinate people who are doing this in their spare time with conflicting priorities like work and school. Part of the fun of homebrew is you can do whatever the hell you want and when you want to.

Just to be honest i don't think that homebrew development should be more than a learning opportunity for coders who just want to mess around and gain experience on other platforms other than pc. If i was an active developer (i am a little less than active though technically a developer, expecially in comparison with some of you on this topic) i would not even watch the download stats. Having to relate with actual demanding customers is not something you learn in university (at least not in an italian university) and the homebrew scene for me is a great opportunity to do just that: having 10 or 100 unknowns who can judge me other than my teachers and learning how to deal with their request in a safe and not critical enviroment.

Homebrew development is just for experimenting and learning, no one does it for a revenue. Usually you look at the number of people that are using your work for motivation, or else you move on to something else after the initial development phase. What's frustrating about the current state of the 3ds scene is that most users care only about piracy related things.

Are we doing the same mistake the big majors are doing? I am talking about considering the piracy as an homebrew enemy instead as an opportunity. Think about that: would we get more or less downloads without piracy and people interested in privacy? I am not sure about the answer but i think that contrary to general belief moving the piracy topics from here to another section would make our little numbers to drop even further. Imho piracy is not the problem and not even part of it. I am more incline to consider it our only allie

Before CFWs releases, downloads number where the same at least for my hbs so no, i'm not making the same mistake big majors are doing. (Are big majors you're referring to SHs?).

The only thing i saw is that starting from CFW releases but much more from pirate9loaderhax release, homebrew development section is full of shit with idiots asking every 5 seconds the same questions about pirate9loaderhax, how to play their pirated iso from another region, etc etc and this, for any dev against piracy it's just disgusting.
When you see game homebrews that gets only 10-15 replies ( http://gbatemp.net/threads/re-release-labyrinth-3d.409007/) and at the same time there are shitthreads talking about how to install pirated contents that gets 50-100-200 replies, you understand why you shouldn't make something "for the community" but just "for yourself".

Also GBAtemp is the first BIG forum that allows piracy discussions (something like people can say that they have on their consoles pirated stuffs and ask for help for them) and this is, at least for me, a braindead idea. Why i still use GBAtemp? Just cause visibility, cause if that's for me, i'll just migrate to wololo's forum.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
