"Switch 2" leaks addressed by Nintendo

joycon2-png.479637

We've seen quite a few leaks, renders and mockups of the so-called "Nintendo Switch 2" recently which could indicate that the official announcement is imminent. After a period of silence, Nintendo has finally addressed these leaks. Speaking to CNET Japan, the company said something along the lines of the following (based on Google Translate): "the gaming hardware that Genki claims to be Nintendo hardware at CES is informal and not what Nintendo provided to the company."

Nintendo has also issued a similar statement to the Japanese publication Sankei. A Nintendo representative said the following to Sankei: “These images and videos are not official.”

On the other end of the leaks, Genki has provided some clarifications after stirring up the gaming community. Speaking to online outlet Game*Spark, they noted that their "Switch 2" models and accessories are based on leaks and that they have not actually seen the actual device.

This goes against what was initially implied by Genki and sows some doubt over the veracity of the leaks. We might only know the actual hardware when Nintendo decides to unveil the console, which hopefully will be in the coming months.

Okay now they're sending lawyers, it's gotta be fake, not even remotely real to the actual product
That doesn't tell us much given how litigious Nintendo is. Might well mean that his mockup is close to the actual product, and they aren't happy about the fact that one small detail or another is being misrepresented. That being a possibility though, they need to stop being dicks about it and just reveal it in an official capacity already.

The hardware (CPU, GPU, ram) is known from people following notes in Nvidia software for months

The motherboard itself was leaked as well as photos of a dev unit running

The only things that aren't known right now for sure are the name and user interface

Nintendo can try to smoke screen this as much as they want, but the ultimate design and hardware of switch 2 are all out in the wild at this point

We just wait now for Nintendo to pull the trigger on an actual announcement
Its very unlikely the console will share the same name. Its unlikely anything that's been leaked is real, its just click bait crap creating pointless hype.

If the console is to be somewhat better, aka subpar to lat gen consoles which the switch was already a gen above.

It cant be as thin as anything leaked.

Or unless nintendo plans to do the usual and recycle the same shit.

Or or or hear me out orrr it’s defamation and they’re falsely getting the audience excited over nothing and not the real product

But none of the stuff that's been leaked is hype-inducing or surprising. That makes it all the more likely it's real. Nintendo isn't gonna mess with success this time around after what happened from Wii to WiiU.

Of course it's going to be older hardware, Nintendo refuses to take a loss on console sales, even temporarily. Any version of DLSS will still be a big improvement, though.

The T239 (new tegra made for Switch 2) is supposed to be somewhere between PS4 and PS4 pro

Considering most new games can still run on that platform (PS4) the Switch 2 should fare much better than Switch 1 with playing current Gen games

If Nintendo made a powerhouse like PS5 they would lose a ton of money with minimal gain - switch is the best selling console currently being made and 3rd best selling of all time, so I think it would be a huge mistake to ditch the platform
The gain is the money they make on software sales.

Yeah, I get the feeling that this is more a potential lawsuit over defamation, rather than for the leaks themselves. It's one thing for small-scare leakers to drop data on social media, because not everyone is going to look for those, and it's minor enough that it can be ignored. But a tech accessory company bringing their leak-based mock-up to news areas and basically claiming "This is it! This is the new console!"? Yeah, that could be seen as Genki trying to (financially) benefit from the hype/impatience over the next console, and/or attempting to damage Nintendo's image by weakening their ability to announce and advertise/sell the actual console once they're ready to do so. So Genki could be looking at defamation charges at the very least, assuming the news is accurate.

In all seriousness, though, it's a bit hilarious. I recall some people thinking that Nintendo was going to start suing people leaking the Switch 2, and are now acting shocked and "angry" that Nintendo may actually be doing so now that someone bigger has tried to more directly damage their image.

They will stop when they beat the Ps2

It's obvious that Nintendo is attempting to downplay the situation, but it's gonna be announced as either the Switch 2 or Switch Pro by March or June as of this year.
Yeah no, in all seriousness it's funny because I feel like they could've come with a better name, but since they haven't by this point I'm inclined to agree that it will be on of those two. If it happens, I'd say it's the first console by Nintendo to be named by fans. Crazy times.

I'm just shocked they still want people to be able to hack their systems by giving us an SD card slot again. It's like they never learn.
Removes all features because it can get hacked. Gets hacked anyway. :O

Hacks are clearly not slowing down their sales anyway, so it would just be punishing regular users by going that strict.

Indie games are usually 1-5GB on the high end.
(Late replying to this, but...) Maybe if they're indie games that barely take any effort, or are basically cookie-cutter builds. Or they're small Early Access games that may or may not actually go anywhere. But those "1-5GB" indie games rarely actually sell unless they can catch a major trend or get promotion from major YouTubers (ex: Lethal Company), because they tend to not have much in the means of content to keep people coming back.

Indies with actual effort like Hades and Hades II, though? In this day and age, you're looking at 10-15 GB at least for PC (and thus Steam Deck). And that's just looking at the size as of Early Access for Hades II, meaning that the game upon leaving Early Access could end up becoming larger. Luckily, the devs of Hades seem to know how to compress the game for "less powerful" hardware, and so it's 5.8 GB on Switch, but that won't always be the case.

And that's just looking at the size as of Early Access for Hades II
I show Hades 2 as being 5.51GB installed. And sure, indies can be bigger, but great art and aesthetics don't necessarily require larger file sizes. IMO 1-2TB in total is plenty enough for a portable system, you only need a few AAA games installed at a given time.

Okay, fair enough for Hades II. I was mainly going off of the size shown on the Steam store page, so that might be what they're estimating the game's size will be once out of Early Access.

That said, while great art and aesthetics don't always translate into larger file sizes, part of it also depends on the model details/sprite work. Longer/more fluid animations can typically lead to larger animation file sizes, especially for 3D models and effects. Not a big deal if you don't plan to have very many animations for each model/entity, but can potentially lead to the file sizes mentioned if there's a good amount of animation for a good few entities. Moreso if you intend for your game to support higher resolutions as well, since the art/aesthetics need to be adjusted to have higher resolution versions that can be rendered.

That said, it becomes much easier to fit all that into a smaller size if you're able to compress the files in a way that everything can be rendered without issues, giving the most bang with the least space taken.

Oh, I kinda just thought about this, but...

There's also the possibility that the "leaks" might've been a convenient excuse for Genki, and that it's possible that Genki may have actually used information acquired through insider trading, or even a stolen prototype unit they bought off the black market. Which, if that's the case, would not be good for Genki, since iirc that kind of stuff is illegal in both the U.S. and Japan.

I agree with you, I just don't think the Switch is the console to keep improving on. I wish it was any of the actual consoles you just mentioned. Backwards compatibility is going to lock them to an ARM ecosystem again with limited functionality. Would rather see their systems pump out some sick visuals, but that's not going to happen because Nintendo thinks it can't compete with the other two even though they totally can if they actually embrace industry standards and get the third parties on board.
My bother in Christ, they've been using the frickin' ARM architecture since 2001 (Technically 1995 if you want to count Project Atlantis). PowerPC, which was used for the GameCube, Wii and Wii U, was pretty much dead by 2017 so there was no point in trying to keep it alive. I'd rather have a weaker console that doesn't consume like 250-300W just by standing idle
