Take-Two forces end to homebrew GTA V Switch port project

The in-progress Switch port of the 2013 Rockstar Games Grand Theft Auto V has been forced to end progress after Take-Two Interactive has threatened legal action against its creator(s).

The homebrew project which used the leaked source code of GTA V was still in early stages, but was making good progress; running natively on Switch. With performance at around 10–25 frames per second on standard hardware and up to 30 fps on overclocked units.

The project's lead developer, known as M0jso, announced on September 28 that the group would stop work by October 3rd. He said he was "thankful for Take-Two's mercy" and admitted the team would had zero chance of winning in court.

It's unclear why there was never any official Switch version, since the console is roughly on par with the PS3 and Xbox 360, where GTA V first released. Was it a business decision, a technical one or simply not a fit for the usual Nintendo audience? What do you think?

Also is this the true end of a fully playable GTA V experience on the Switch or do you think others will now step up to tackle the unfinished project?

leave the multi billion dollar comapny alone, they're barely making ends meet. it's immoral to port games to other consoles without consent, oh poor rockstar being preyed on by evil modders. lol

people gotta learn to A) use an anon account with no trace to their RL identity if they are in the USA B) live outside the USA in a non affiliated country (no western) and then rockstar can eat die. remember when take twoo lost their shit thinking the GTA 6 footage leaker was gonna leak the playable build they got their hands in so they took it to courts at a high level and subpnoa'ed microsoft, discord and other companies to doxx where he is but they found no leads? yeah, that.

anyways, modders always been making stupid ass shit mistakes like this since eons, are still doing it and will still keep doing it.

With a game as large as GTAV, that's a pretty long shot. Other mistakes were made too, and Rockstar would probably go after cleanroom ports too given their "modding policy", but the real impact of this approach was that nobody can continue where they left off.
Yeah, I remember them taking down the GTA III port too. Which was a bit pointless. I know they sell the trilogy of GTA games on Switch, but it's not like it's raking in billions for them, it's chump change at this point.

I don't know why people advertise things they know they're not supposed to be doing before they're finished. I mean it's leaked source code. Finish the port without saying anything and then just drop the finished build and dip. At that point it's already done and on the internet. Nothing they can do about it.

I have my disagreements with how Grand Theft Auto 6 is being handled, but that doesn't make using leaked source code right on the homebrew developer's part. I'm sure there's going to be a lot more people in defense of the homebrew developer, but two wrongs don't make a right. We are supposed to be bigger and better than the wicked corporations, not just as stupid as they are with poor decisions and actions. Desperation and stealing aren't the answers to the problem.
i heard that he was also making people pay to use the online mode.

i don't know if that was ever true, but if it was, that WOULD be another scummy thing that this homebrew dev was doing and it would have been taken down due to that even if the homebrew dev was not using stolen code.

so either way it would have been taken down.

It is immoral. What the corporations are doing is immoral. Being immoral back doesn't make you any better than they are, you become just as guilty through different means. This isn't justice, it's just a stupid back and forth process with zero winners. People need to stop acting like they are knights in shining armor being this way.
Boo hoo. Is your GBATemp account monitored by your employer or something? Rockstar loses nothing from this port existing, they can still make their own and everyone will flock to it by default. All they have to do is release a Switch version officially that doesn't have any compromises an unofficial port makes up for. Copyright law is bullshit spearheaded by publishing companies to milk artists dry, and they will erase an artistic work if that's what it takes, THAT is immoral. You have much to learn.

P.S. is this a good time to plug my website?

"Technically"?
Lol, do you care to elaborate on that? You didn't finish your sentence.

That obviously sucks, but you're just painting a massive target on your back by:
1. Using leaked source code
2. Tackling on Take Two's cash cow
3. Taunting them about it

No real sympathy for the guy at the end of the day, but at least he made the correct decision to call it quits. It's not worth potentially ruining the rest of your life when you know what these fuckers are capable of.

"Technically" is supposed to be followed by your rationale.

If you need more details, if you go by the meaning of the word, it is immoral given a normal sense of right and wrong.
Right, so you have no clue what the fuck you are talking about. Could've just said that, you don't have to be a smartass and pretend like you have an answer if you in fact don't.

Dumb question, but how can they determine that it is indeed leaked code and not a bunch of people reverse engineering GTA V since 2013?
If the modified sources are shared, then it's obvious.

For binaries, the answer is similar to how byte-perfect decompilations are done. When you compile a program, some compilers leave behind a sort of calling card. If you know the behavior of the compiler that built the program, then you can pretty easily compare the assembly to your source code and figure out what (hasn't) changed. I imagine this would be pretty easy to prove in court.

I feel like this could have a different ending had the dev used a cleanly reverse-engineered source code instead of the leaked source code.
There have already been projects based on reverse-engineered GTA code and those were shut down in the past. Take-Two is worse than Nintendo when it comes to disrespecting Fair Use.
Honestly, I see this happening and am happy I stopped buying GTA games years ago. If you are going to port this game to everything with a screen, but skip over systems, then you can’t be mad when someone else does it for you. Although, the dude porting it should have just remained quiet. The biggest mistake here was talking about it before it was ready. People gotta stop doing that shit. Companies like T2 spend most of their time looking for projects to shut down. You know, instead of focusing on gta6

People start messing with someone else's copyrighted content and then get mad when they're told to stop.

Like, what did they expect to happen?
Let's be real.

People are stealing cars and killing people on the streets as we speak. But courts will be busy with Take Two suing a homebrew dev...
Yeah, and people still get pulled over for having too much tint on their windows. If you break the law, even if it's one you don't think is that big a deal, put on your big boy pants and take responsibility and don't whine because some serial murderer still hasn't been caught. And no, the courts will never, ever see this "case" because the devs backed down.

"He said he was "thankful for Take-Two's mercy" and admitted the team would had zero chance of winning in court."

These were some innocent homebrew devs doing a decompilation. This was illegally leaked source code they were using. C'mon man!

Fair use???!!! If it was actually "fair use," devs would have nothing to fear. Rever
I think it's highly likely they do an official port of GTA5 to Switch 2 at some point assuming that's something Nintendo wants, but this is still more of a "just because we can" type of C&D.
A port of GTA6 is more likely. GTA5 is so 2014. And yes, the Switch is quite capable of running GTA 6 just as the Xbox Series S is. It will eventually happen, no matter what the dweebs of Digital Foundry said at the Switch 2's launch.

This is completely different, this is not stolen source code like the GTAV port was, but a port from x360 which you must provide a legal copy of yourself. Try reading first before commenting.
