Facebook is NOT the appropriate place to vent.
Sure, everyone has to vent about something. You're completely allowed to vent about how much of a douche your boss is, but if you do it to his face you'll get fired.
Posting something about someone on Facebook is essentially the same thing as saying it to their face. It's a public social network. It will get back to them one way or another.

If she posted something like "Osama Bin Laden is going to kill my math teacher" that could be interpreted as a threat as there is a direct intention of harm.
Wishing is kind of like wanting. This girl probably just had too much homework and was frustrated. Much like a lot of teenagers say they wish their parents were dead, but would never want harm done to their parents, they're just being angsty.
I think a 5 day suspension is a little much. I dont think this is a good enough reason alone to take her out of school. The only "punishment' I see fit here is a transfer to another teachers class and maybe some counseling, and a lesson on what is appropriate to put on the internet.

If it's not in school, the school system shouldn't do anything. I had the exact same thing happen to me back when MSN was so popular.
I had a profile, and there was this one bitch teacher who hated me so much. After a bad day in class with her, I went home, just called her a bitch, I used no names or school names, bam, suspended. Apparently schools own their students even if they're off school grounds :/

Anyway, yeah, I still think it's rediculous, but there's worse problems in the world.
taking a teenager out of the learning environment could be detrimental to the rest of their year, especialy if they are already behind. I mean if the teacher for some reason really does see this girl as a threat, I would understand removing her, like into another class.personuser said:

Suspensions usually don't make much of a difference as the student is free to do whatever he wants at home. As for detentions, it's silly to keep a kid locked up in a room doing nothing for a set amount of time.
As for the topic at hand, the student was stupid enough to post that on Facebook where anyone can see it. Although, I doubt that was intended as a serious death threat.

Not really. When your suspended, they give you a work package that they would be teaching in class at that time. So you're still doing everything, you just don't get the help, see your friends or anything.
