Hi,

A friend would like to stream games from a NAS instead of a harddrive connected to the Wii and he came up with an idea using something called UMS (not sure what) and connect the Wii to the NAS/computer running Linux.

This got a couple of benefits as I see it, but have anyone tried this solution? I'm really not sure which drivers needed.

I would really like to see support for this. The harddrive will be better cooled, more silent etc. And you can have the drive in a HTPC.

Was answered several times, but again:

The Drivers/Hardware for W-Lan and the Lan Adapter are too crappy, you wouldn't get enough speed for a game to run from there. That's also why FlatMii uses it's own Hardware/Drivers for that. So, not possible (Maybe if someone writes a good driver...but no idea if we then would still have enough speed...I don't think so...).

If you want something like that, get FlatMii, or forget it. I don't have to mention that FlatMii is safer from Updates from Nintendo, and there aren't compability issues than with SoftMods...

If you run USB host on the computer, won't that work? Then you probably get the required speed and since there's loaders supporting multiple WBFS, guess how awesome that would be.

I don't know coding, but will it be that much harder to using a NAS etc, connected via USB?

EDIT:
Now talking without Flatmii (of course). Just wanted to make that clear.

Don't forget that flatmii has 99.99% GC & Wii compatibility. Every game that plays from the disc drive will work with it. No worrying about alt dols and shit. As far as speed, it puts out an extremely constant 2.7mB/s. I clocked it for 30 minutes and the stream was 2.7 the whole time. Throw in another $5 and get a flatmii 125 and you have a modchip, too.

Sounds really cool, but do you have any experience running this under Linux? Like Debian or another proper dist compare to Ubuntu?

There's probably a workaround, but I just heard Nintendo bricks console with FlatMii and it's only officially support up to 4.0.

it is almost impossible for them to tell if it has a flatmii. it is just a drive emulator. so the wii thinks it is the drive. and if they do find a way to tell, it isn't soldered anywear. just unplug it. the only trouble i had will mine was right wher i first hooked it up. i was on 3.4u and when i loaded a fakesigned disc with it (guitar hero customs) i got the "an error has occurred" screen. i patched an ios and all is well on the homefront.

I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)

when SD cards/microSD write speeds drop below a meg a sec, they're usually on the verge of dying

@The Real Jdbye, I considered that, but i'll have to wait until i can get the eu version in the mail lol
