Sony announces Backbone One PlayStation Edition mobile controller for PS4 and PS5 remote play

In 2020, the Backbone One was released--a mobile controller that attaches to your phone, and can be folded up nice and neat to be taken on the go. There were versions of the portable controller for both iOS and Android, and they would eventually see support from Xbox, where they promoted the controller for use with Xbox Game Pass's xCloud streaming service for phones. Now, PlayStation is getting in on things, by revealing their own unique DualSense-themed variant of the Backbone One. The "PlayStation Edition" form of the controller comes with some extra bonus features, including the ability to connect directly to the PlayStation Pulse 3D headset, and seamless support with the PS Remote Play app--notable, as the app does not support other similar mobile gamepads--only PlayStation branded ones such as the DualShock 4. Right now, only an iPhone-specific model is available, for $99.99.

Backbone One is the gaming essential for PlayStation on iPhone. If you have access to broadband internet and a PS5 or PS4 console, plug an iPhone into the Backbone One and instantly start playing your PS5 and PS4 games with the power of the PS Remote Play app—whether that’s out and about or even elsewhere in the home*. See the PlayStation Remote Play website for more information: https://www.playstation.com/remote-play/

Backbone One also works wonderfully with App Store games and other game streaming services that support controllers, including Genshin Impact, Fantasian, Call of Duty: Mobile, and more. Players can download the Backbone App for a customized PlayStation experience. Inside the app, you’ll see various PlayStation integrations, such as custom glyphs representing the iconic PlayStation shapes and the ability to browse hundreds of game titles.

Now this fully makes me believe next generation consoles are headed towards dock style consoles

The PSP and Vita didn't suck, though.
As much as I have loads of love and great memories with the Vita, the device did suck objectively.
Weak CPU, proprietary memory cards, lackluster game catalog, the back panel.
It could have been much more but Sony made so many dumb decisions with it that at this point the Dreamcast was a bigger success.

It’s too bad their remote play is fucking terrible
Actually still superior to most all cloudgames if you are in the same house and network.

I recall doing a lil switchroot&chiaki at a friends house and then hijacking their khiii fight.
Yes. It's ok (But sony is garbage)

Can we talk about more important things now ?
Like: Why dafuq is kh cloud on switch ?!?!

It funny how Switch's """awkward""" joystick placement is now standard for handheld devices.
800 hours Apex on Switchy and I fail to see the issue. Pirate-kun

Interesting. Joy-cons for smart phones...
Probably same parts supplier. (Those cheap economy gangstas...)
Imagine their factory "magically disappearing.
They'd have to come up with new joycon analogues *surprised pikachu*

They couldn't even change the analog stick layout for the Playstation edition? Lame.

But what I'm wondering is what makes this thing so interesting that it attracted money from both Microsoft and Sony? There are thousands of products like this that have been around for like a decade, and I doubt Sony or Microsoft would have a hard time producing one themselves.

I was looking at the picture for a couple minutes thinking "something seems off" and then I realized. It doesn't have the iconic PS D-pad. It's really weird seeing a controller with PS face buttons and a generic D-pad, makes it look like a knockoff, in this case an officially licensed knockoff. Making new molds would have increased the cost, so they were obviously trying to save a buck, I personally feel they should do it right or not do it at all.

Idk, I found both GeForce Now and Gamepass to be better options for me. Remote play doesn’t work if you are outside of the same network, which means I can’t play Bloodborne everywhere. If I am going to play my PS4 at home, then I would much rather play on my TV, laptop, and maybe on my hacked Switch. It just doesn’t do what I would like to see it do.

Most powerful handheld I said. I imagine it won't last long tho, ROG or Steamdeck 2 will prob overpower it. I will prob buy a switch2 tho, gotta have that Mariokart 9.

I'm thinking of selling my current drum machine, piano keyboard, and few synthesizers, and buy a new $699 drum machine/ workstation. Downsize but upgrade. But like any device, ill never get the money I paid into it. Hard to let stuff go for half what you paid.
