Sonic 2 for the Master System / Game Gear receives an impressive fanmade 16-bit remake demo
The past few months saw quite a number of new and updated romhacking and homebrew projects, with the likes of the Sonic Hacking Contest 2024 (SHC) and the Sonic Amateur Games Expo 2024 (SAGE) happening just a few weeks ago. However, those two are far from being the only Sonic-related events happening during these past months, as just as recently as last week, the Chao Games Showcase 2024 (CGS) took place, showing even more fanmade projects related to Sonic in general.
One of these new projects is a fanmade remake of the lesser known 8-bit iteration of Sonic 2, which was originally released for the Sega Master System (SMS) and its portable brother, the Sega Game Gear (GG). While the original Sonic 1 SMS/GG release featured zones and levels closely resembling that of the 16-bit version of the game, Sonic 2 SMS/GG instead features new original levels compared to the popular 16-bit version, which makes it a standout release on its own.
Seeing how much the 8-bit version deviated from the 16-bit one, Team Supernova, with StellarStardust being the project lead, started work on a fanmade remake project for that version of the game, with the first iteration of it being showcased in CGS 2024.
StellarStardust said:This project aims to re-imagine the 8-bit Master System/Game Gear versions of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Every zone has been re-imagined completely to fit that of the likes of Sonic 2 and CD. This demo for CGS2024 features only one zone, Under Ground Zone.
The demo for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 SMS/GG 16-bit is now available and can be downloaded from the CGS 2024 forum thread for the project, and those interested can try out the demo right now. Since its original release, the game has seen 3 bugfixing patches, with the latest patch adding controller support.
