So if you replace the sound and movie folder then resign it, it should work?
No, like I said, you mustn't add files and as the NTSC-U iso doesn't have "ep08_s17.thp", you have to delete it before/after replacing. I assume you guys are using Partitionbuilder, as replacing every of the over 10.000 files with WiiScrubber is a bit of work, lol

But if you do so, yes: It works.
But there are some issues... The biggest one are that little dialogues you can hear with the C button, as the timing is wrong if you use the japanese voices.

what program did you use to undub the iso?
WiiScrubber+Partitionmanager (included with WiiScrubber)

I did

Could you make a primitive tutorial of exactly what files need replacing? I just copied the entire Japanese sound folder, pasted it into an English folder, repartitioned it with the files from the original ISO and the folder with the Japanese sounds, deleted the original, imported the new one, then burned that.

And that got me so far as the OP movie, but no title screen.

I've extracted the second partion and replaced the sound and movie folder with the japanese ones. How do I rebuild it now? partionrebuilder has no real instructions

What I did was to extract the files it needs from the original ISO. They're all at the top of the DATA partition when opened in WiiScrubber. Of course, I didn't get the game working properly, but I did this and the game actually booted, so I assume it works.

You forgot to replace the movie folder maybe?

Yes, that's right.
First extract both partitions (japanese and english) and also the system files from the english partition (main.dol, boot.bin,...), replace all files you want in the english partition, build a .img file out of it (with Partitionmanager and the system files you extracted), delete the original partition in the english iso and import the new one. Finish!

I replaced: opening.bnr, game_over.bin, whole Sound folder; whole Movie folder, but without ep08_s17.thp; title.tpl in the Tpl folder
Thats it.

It may have been those opening and game_over files then. I doubt the movie folder would have mattered, although I will do that too. Now I just have to extract everything again, I deleted everything ;_;

-opening.bnr is the banner, that's for sure not the reason.
-game_over.bin... Dunno what that is, but it was different from the japanese one, so I just replaced it, lol
-the movie folder shouldn't matter

EDIT: @shonosuke: Yes, because it's the same as in the japanese iso.

One last question, What scrub type should I use after replacing it?

Umm, you don't need to scrub it. Just replace the partition and it's done.
If you want to scrub, Trucha should be the better method in that case, but I never got it to work, so I can't recommend it.

Im getting the japanese banner. Once I go into the game I get a black screen. Tried booting it with and wtithout freeloader. Precisely followed your instructions
Does it work with the english banner?

I got the same problem as before, it just freezes when I try to go past the opening video (which was Japanese this time, hurrah).
I really don't know how to help you... I desperated on the same problem, but seems like the solution isn't the same. I only again can suggest searching for files you could have deleted/added during the replacement process.
Check how much files are in the NTSC-U sound folder, the how much are in the NTSC-J folder. It should be 10.462 files.

Of course.

Anyone have any suggestions for re-encoding the video files? I'd like to add subtitles.
No way I know of... You can encode the video to something using WinFF, but not to .thp again.

Yeah, I can get them out of thp format just fine, it was finding a way to encode back into thp that was killing me. If anyone more knowledgeable about this comes along, I have the opening all translated and timed to a subtitle file, if they would either encode it for me or teach me how?

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
