Shadow Man N64: Can't see for beans!

I am having two issues with the N64 game Shadow Man. Two! That I can't solve! It's like we're reaching into impossibility figures here! But anyway...

1. The visuals are incredibly dark, even with the brightness in the options set to max. I've tried combining this with my TV's stock brightness options, but that doesn't help and just makes the game look poopy. What can I do to fix this?
2. I can't read the subtitles easily. The colors of the text are sometimes very dark, and sometimes the font is simply unreadable. If I turn HD Graphics off, the subtitles get easier to read (not by much, but I can at least see the letters), but the rest of the game gets really hard on my eyes. What can I do to fix this?
