So, I had the opportunity to test a Disney platform fighter during Summer 2023. This game is supposed to launch sometime in late 2024, so stay tuned.
I was able to play as seven characters during my 1 and a half hour play session. There were at least 35 more characters in the game, however I don't know who they were because their images were blacked out with a question mark over them.
I was able to play as the following fighters. A Squirrel from Ice Age, Spider Man, Mickey Mouse, the famous Pixar Lamp, Thanos, Aqua and Homer Simpson, (who goes super Saiyan and has Captain Falcon knee.)
This game is visually stunning, like I am amazed with how good this game looks. It looks cartoony with a slight sense of realism. All the character models looked very detailed as well. The fur on the squirrel stood out to me the most. It looks better than Smash Ultimate, to be fair that isn't saying all too much seeing as it's a 5-year-old game at this point. The game was running on PC as well.
This game does pull a lot from Smash, as the squirrel played pretty much like Diddy Kong in Smash Bros, but instead of using a banana he uses an acorn. And as I mentioned earlier, Homer Simpson has Captain Falcon's knee attack.
There will also be a story mode campaign in this game. I wasn't able to play it myself, but I did see gameplay from the second testing booth. It basically plays like a regular 2D platformer, and at the end of each level you have to fight a mini boss. After that you get to see a cutscene and the game continues from there.
There were a lot of other modes that were all blocked off, so unfortunately, I couldn't play them.
One of my favorite levels was this Ice Age Dinosaur stage where you ride a floating. platform through different parts of a Jungle before making your way to a beautiful lava platforming area. You can also see the silhouette of a giant dinosaur with red eyes in the misty background during the lava section. Again, I can't get over how good this game looks visually.
This game also has some sort of move canceling meter to do combos, I couldn't get a hang of it though, but it was cool getting destroyed by other players using it!
