Apologies if this is the wrong side of the forum to ask this. I've been looking into doing a translation for the Japan-only PS2 game Gantz. After extracting the dump, I found that all the story dialogue text is in 6 .bin files, with the text showing up clearly with a HEX editor.

Now, I know nothing about translating/patching PS2 games. I thought it would be as simple as just editing the .bin files text, and overwriting the original one within the .ISO. The first attempt gave me a corrupted PS2 logo, and the second just gave me the RSoD. Is there a guide for how to exactly work with games that are like this? It seems so easy considering the text is just right there, but it isn't.

If you're getting an RSOD, you're probably not creating the ISO file correctly.

Corrupted PS2 logo can happen when an out-of-region game is loaded on the wrong region console. Ignore this unless you're not getting past the screen.

https://nenkai.github.io/gt-modding-hub/ps2/gt4/volume/#cdvdgen-slow-method

Do not use the "ImgBurn" method. I've tried in the past with no success at all.

Be VERY careful about what files and directories go first. The PS2 has a very picky when it comes to things like this.

If you're unsure, install IsoBuster and compare LBAs.

Afraid not. I have tried the tools mentioned by master801 but I get errors no matter how I try to put the .ISO back together. I still want to translate the game but currently I am just stuck.

Hello brother, can you make this translated ISO available for download? I've always wanted to play this Gantz game, thanks!

echoing the previous posts, would love to gain more info on the process/programs used. I tried doing it with multiple hex editors and it's not playable, many translated parts are broken etc.

You're doing it wrong, then, because it worked just fine for me, in previous post.

I've been using MadEdit and it works fine. However, I do have some issues that ultimately made me stop trying to work on this.
Text seems to have a pre-defined limit of characters. I'd say around 50% of the text I've had so far could be fitted just fine, and for the rest I had to either simplify or just outright remove parts of the translation since it couldn't fit, and trying to add room for more text seems to disrupt how the game loads it's text boxes and cutscenes in order, ultimately breaking the game. This might be a game that requires more than just simple HEX editing to fully translate, I have no clue.

Oh man I hope you keep going on the translation of this game. I really love it and beat it once like 15 years ago just using that guide on gamefaq.

What project lol

All we're doing is experimenting on a PS2 game that could've easily been translated with the proper tools.

Reason why I didn't go any further than a simple screen-shot is because I don't care for the game at all.

If others are interested, I can do a full blown machine translation, but I don't like doing that. It ruins the gameplay. (Yosuga no Sora English translation, for example.)

I still want to finish the translation, but I have posted the issue I've been facing a while ago in this thread if you scroll up a bit, which is that this game seems to break once you try to add more room for translated sentences. Perhaps @master801 can do this since he's going on about "proper tools" or whatever.

you can't properly scale 240p games

720, 1440 and 2160 can scale them just fine

    huh. never realized that
  • NinStar @ NinStar:
the only common low-res (which is not even that common in games) you can properly scale to 1080 is 360, but even that can also scale to 720

when I'm playing emulators I just stick to 720, if I had a 1440p or 4k screen I would prefer those over 1080p
