If you have Luma and AL9H, update your Luma then download the last 11.3 update, just to be safe.
As for playing online, its safe however pay attention that you might get banned if you get caught cheating or using mods online.
If you're just playing online for fun, you're fine.

but thought it wasnt a good idea to update it as ruins the homebrew launcher and seems risky is there a way to revert back to 11.2 if needed then if im running luma and AL9H

also when updateing luma should i get the nightly build or the other one as i got the other one as didnt wanna risk
Nope. It doesn't.

It's not.

Make a nand backup in decrypt9. You can restore it later if you're really that anal about it.
this is what mmy seller told me Essentially you can update to the latest version of the 3ds software without it affecting luma or a9lh, however it can break the home brew launcher. I believe there is a fix for that out and has to be downloaded from http://smealum.github.io/3ds/ ps how do i make a back up before i update dude im such a newb on the 3ds

Download the homebrew starter pack from smealum's website and extract it to the root of your 3DS's SD card, alternatively you can just update Luma to the latest hourly which also fixes homebrew launcher.

Just update dude.

The "homebrew launcher breaking," as you call it, is just you having an outdated version.

All you need to do is update your homebrew launcher, and update luma3ds while you're at it (get the latest stable version, that's fine; or use the updater cia, it doesn't really matter) and then update through the system settings.

If you really want to create a backup:
  • Make sure you have at least 2GB of space free on your (micro)SD card
  • Check your /luma/payloads folder; you might have a file called something like start_dec9.bin (the first part before the underscore might be different, it's the button to press and hold on bootup to load it)
  • If you don't have that file, go download decrypt9, rename it as above, and put it there
  • Cold boot your 3ds while holding start or whatever
  • Figure the rest out, make a sysnand backup
  • Copy the file it made to your computer
  • ???
  • profit

Hi I want to pitch in but not steal this thread. I just did the same Luma and a9lh hack from 3ds.guide last night. following it verbatim I suppose I am on the latest Stable release of Luma......... and I am confirmed on 11.3. If I was to "obtain" CIA files and play online would I get banned or should I update my Luma...... to the nightlies?...... I just want a stable build.. and not have to update everyday to play online ha..

You will not get banned for playing online with CIA files. You will only get banned if you blatanly cheat online or access the in-game online features for a game that hasn't been released yet. You also do not have to change to Luma nightlies.

Don't play games onlines that haven't been officially released yet. That's how a whole bunch of people got perma banned for playing SuMo before release online. Unreleased game, even if it's CIA, is not safe for online play. After it's released officially, have fun. Until then, stay offline. Just have your fun offline.

  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)

    run h2testw on it

when SD cards/microSD write speeds drop below a meg a sec, they're usually on the verge of dying
