In FFX all the summons were originally human who, in order to defeat Sin, had to become a weapon for the summoner. Except Seymour's Mother who become one in order to protect him on his journey (pilgrimage). Because there is never just one summoner, just one makes the cut.

I remember when I saw her for the first time in that cutscene. I was shocked at how awesome/creepy she was.(Anima, not your aunt Sandy.)
