Sup!
I Would like to own a Phat DS since I appreciate it's superior design, sturdyness, uniqueness, and superior buttons (and speakers, afaik).
However, the things on the screen are like an elder scrolls character with a 100% chameleon enchantment on... they're not there.
I've thought about it and researched simple backlight screen replacement a la backlit original GBA, but as far as I leared this is impossible because the good new (lite) screens have an added power director chip, screen outputs would have to be mapped and all that jazz...
But then I figured, wait, sizewise the hardware inside is pretty similar, isn't it? Maybe, a Lite's innards could be stripped out of it, and inserted into the Phat, perhaps with some 'persuasion', adding the good screen, increased power\fidelity of the Lite, yet keeping the interesting, sturdy design, and the superior controls (and speakers?) of the Phat, with some knowledge of electronics.
And that is the problem: I have no such knowledge, sadly.
To my knowledge from derping on the internet I've seen no attempt to do this beforehand,
So that's why I'm asking you guys, since I know you guys are the tops.
Is what I'm suggesting possible?
Some points to take into consideration:
*Bezels or the opposite will not be problems if needed, however I'm aligned to think that both screens are the same size? (pre-post edit: DS lite screens seem to be 3.12 in, original 3.0., but again, unbezelling is tolerated to an extent, and it's not that much)
*The Battery on both devices is different, and thus likely fit differently. Lite has a 1000mah to Phat's 800mah. Of course the lite has a bigger power consumption - though I would happily use third party batteries of higher capacity that I have no doubt exist by now, on the condition that they aren't of crappy build quality that can harm the machine.
Consoles should ideally last our lifetimes with as few repairs as possible, since they sadly aren't going to be re-manufactured, are they?
*Of course, the speakers on the Phat are louder and the spread is bigger, which can make them seem "of lower quality" to some (bigger arc = worse acoustics in "the space"), but the same could be said that the quieter Lite speakers are only "of better quality" since they are "pushing out the sound in a more linear path". If a change is necessary, which I doubt, it again amounts to shell changes.
*Though aside from bezelling\unbezelling or carving the inside to fit stuff, I am apprehensive of making changes to the shell, as the more shell you get out, the less physically sturdier and "original" it gets, and that is not really a benefit...
I hope there's some hardcore NDS freaks here to correct any mistakes I made and perhaps make what I'm suggesting a possibility. Thanks everyone and excuse my English, it sadly doesn't get much use.
P.S.: I would appreciate it if this doesn't become a battleground for different types of DS series models cults. Play what you like!
