Sup!
I Would like to own a Phat DS since I appreciate it's superior design, sturdyness, uniqueness, and superior buttons (and speakers, afaik).

However, the things on the screen are like an elder scrolls character with a 100% chameleon enchantment on... they're not there.

I've thought about it and researched simple backlight screen replacement a la backlit original GBA, but as far as I leared this is impossible because the good new (lite) screens have an added power director chip, screen outputs would have to be mapped and all that jazz...

But then I figured, wait, sizewise the hardware inside is pretty similar, isn't it? Maybe, a Lite's innards could be stripped out of it, and inserted into the Phat, perhaps with some 'persuasion', adding the good screen, increased power\fidelity of the Lite, yet keeping the interesting, sturdy design, and the superior controls (and speakers?) of the Phat, with some knowledge of electronics.

And that is the problem: I have no such knowledge, sadly.
To my knowledge from derping on the internet I've seen no attempt to do this beforehand,
So that's why I'm asking you guys, since I know you guys are the tops.

Is what I'm suggesting possible?

Some points to take into consideration:

*Bezels or the opposite will not be problems if needed, however I'm aligned to think that both screens are the same size? (pre-post edit: DS lite screens seem to be 3.12 in, original 3.0., but again, unbezelling is tolerated to an extent, and it's not that much)

*The Battery on both devices is different, and thus likely fit differently. Lite has a 1000mah to Phat's 800mah. Of course the lite has a bigger power consumption - though I would happily use third party batteries of higher capacity that I have no doubt exist by now, on the condition that they aren't of crappy build quality that can harm the machine.
Consoles should ideally last our lifetimes with as few repairs as possible, since they sadly aren't going to be re-manufactured, are they?

*Of course, the speakers on the Phat are louder and the spread is bigger, which can make them seem "of lower quality" to some (bigger arc = worse acoustics in "the space"), but the same could be said that the quieter Lite speakers are only "of better quality" since they are "pushing out the sound in a more linear path". If a change is necessary, which I doubt, it again amounts to shell changes.

*Though aside from bezelling\unbezelling or carving the inside to fit stuff, I am apprehensive of making changes to the shell, as the more shell you get out, the less physically sturdier and "original" it gets, and that is not really a benefit...

I hope there's some hardcore NDS freaks here to correct any mistakes I made and perhaps make what I'm suggesting a possibility. Thanks everyone and excuse my English, it sadly doesn't get much use.

P.S.: I would appreciate it if this doesn't become a battleground for different types of DS series models cults. Play what you like!

I got to be fairly familiar with the inside of my original DS when I did a case replacement a while back
https://gbatemp.net/threads/ds-original-phat-replacement-case-review-56k-no.364632/

The button placement and style alone makes it a hard proposition (I would probably want to make standalone control boards and fly them back to the DS lite motherboard (there should be debug/test points that some of the automatic controller/external controller mods for the DS lite will use).
To that end I would sooner make a whole new case for the lite and get it injection moulded or something, and if I was going to do that I would go the other way and make a really nice to hold case that would never fit in a pocket (think the thickness and lines of a properly contoured home console controller).
Otherwise yeah I would think how to retrofit a DS lite screen to an original DS. The lack of a brightness control chip the same as the lite (some of the later ones had them if you unlocked them with flashme) could be a problem but I would probably just externally handle it and do a cheap torch/flashlight approach and have each on/off cycle from the original DS instead cycle through the brightnesses if you even wanted such a thing.

Even if I manage to find a system that has the brightness chip or something, the question is whether the quality of the screen (vs the backlight) is the same on the phat and lite..
I'm saying this since it appears at least from the internet that the phat has had a frontlit screen, instead of a backlit one, which leads me to question if it's the same type\model of screen?

1.If it IS, I ask how is it possible to find a flashme compatible firmware nds, or how to do the external torch\flashlight approach that you're talking about.
2.If it ISN'T, then the question is on transposing a lite screen, chip and battery like you said, or where can I find someone which does that thing.

P.S. / off topic
Yes, Everyone wishes for a console that's molded in grip form, but they don't do it not only because of portability, how else are they going to sell you them expensive $60 monster hunter grips ;)
A lot of things would have been solved if would have just done the logical thing and made the 3DS 512x256. Perfect DS 2x scaling no stretch. But what do I know?

Thanks for your time!

Most screens are self contained these days. Lights inbuilt into them in anything you are likely to buy. Some do retrofit screens for computers and laptops but most small screens (sub 7 inch tends to be the mark) are a different matter. I don't think you can simply drop one in a sa direct replacement, while I have not looked into it I imagine many would have before now (everybody seems to love retrofitting old consoles with newer and fancier screens).

The base firmware corresponds to the capability of the chip, though not every one will gain brightness every DS and DS lite should work with flashme*, with the possible exception of the ique ones (a China only model) and Korean ones (later models that I don't know much about). The easiest way to tell the firmware is the so called pictochat trick.

Brightness control stuff, though the short version is install flashme and if it can do it then it will.

*it does other things like skip the health and safety screen (if you want it to, there are versions called stealth that keep it), allow you to run unsigned wireless code, force booting from GBA slots and protects against certain types of bricks.

Everything else I spoke of in the other post was of a more hypothetical nature.

Here, I fetched this off of a discussion.. Don't know how true it is but it's in contradiction with / addition to the other links...

"There was a discussion about the different revisions somewhere, gonna find it.

Purely from memory... I believe that the info was:

All DS models with v5 or later firmware have backlit screens.

Many DS models with v4 firmware have a backlit screen, with unconfirmed exceptions.

Several v3 models (Depending on region) had a backlight, mainly the special edition ones, such as the mario kart DS.

V2 is frontlight

V1 is frontlight

Ique DS (The Chinese DS) has backlight starting from firmware 1 models.

Japanese models v3,4,5 all had a backlight, no other info on earlier generations."

Sadly this was in 2008 and I don't think that man ever logged in recently.

Still, it's hypothetical and speculative and you seem to know how things go.

Pink ones, you say?
