NOTE: Im mobile so Im not able to edit this post as I'd like

As of this coming Saturday, unlocking your phone to use on another carrier without the permission of your phone provider (in the United States) will be illegal. Users will still be allowed to root/jailbreak their phones but not unlock.

This is total bullshit! Gotta love a corproate runned country #Sarcasm *rolls eyes*

My phone is unlocked, I'm not about to re-lock it just to make some incompetent money grubbing assholes happy.
I don't see this law getting enforced, specially not with android being as easy to unlock as it is.

Also how can they do this, they previously ruled banning unlocking unconstitutional, I was under the impression some law prevented them from going back and changing that.

A lot of companies sell phones unlocked anyways, I don't see the problem. Especially here, modding your Wii is illegal, but who the hell has that stopped?

A lot of Androids have scripts to unlock it. What are they going to do? Have you arrested when you bring your unlocked phone in for repair? Raid your house when you root your phone?

This is what happens when people depend on artifically inexpensive
carrier subsidised hardware.

Buy your phone at cost and you won't have to worry about it.

how does this affect most people? would you really by a subsidized under contract and switch carriers while your contract is still active? makes no sense to me.

I wonder what the chances of enforcement on that will be. I suppose it will be the end of unlocking services but I never used those anyway

I'll be completely honest with you, I don't see the real point in unlocking a phone; either buy an unlocked phone directly from the company, or just find a plan that fits your needs ^_^

Personally, I have a crappy prepaid phone, but it gets the job done. No need for unlocking to use on T-Mobile or such.

In Brazil, companies are obligated by law to unlock our phones if we request them to.

This is what happens when people depend on artifically inexpensive
carrier subsidised hardware.

Buy your phone at cost and you won't have to worry about it.

This is easily solved by making a contract with the phone provider when buying a subsidized phone. This contracts gives the user the obligation to use the phone provider services for at least 6 months for example. You can then unlock your phone later

EDIT:

I'll be completely honest with you, I don't see the real point in unlocking a phone; either buy an unlocked phone directly from the company, or just find a plan that fits your needs ^_^

If you for some reason need or want to change the phone supplier you would have to buy a different phone just because of that? This doesn't sound reasonable to me at all, it seems like the company owns the phone not you

A) The Mayans were right - it's the A-lock-alypse!
B) Aw man, it was such a key feature!
C) something something Unlock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels!
D) Damn government phoneys!

Take your pick.

I like D, I will choose D!!

On-topic: I never unlocked my phone in a way to use another carrier... BUT now I know it's possible because it's making news. Damn it! Late again!
