A user from 3DSPlaza.com has begun work on Project Triniate, a browser-based MMORPG for the 3DS. The lack of Java or Flash on the 3DS does make this a considerable technical challenge, but there is a video of it working after the break, and you can check out the thread dedicated to the project. The developer makes it clear that “it might not even be released to the public at all”, but it’s still an interesting concept.

Eh, browser games usually aren't all that great, and this one doesn't even have any help. This game will most likely end up playing like a facebook game if even that far

With the low memory permitted to the game, I don't see how an MMORPG could work. CSS3 animations are choppy when you have about ~20 images loaded on the screen, and they're animations run from native code. Animations via JavaScript are going to be even slower once you get a few things moving around on the screen (and keeping up with off-screen buffering).

Add that there is no sound, no L, R, X or Y support and only a tricky B button detection mechanism available (B button detection requires having an element focussed and capturing the blur event). Which leaves ↑, →, ↓, ← and A, which make annoying repetitive noises.

I still find it amusing that people try to make the browser into something it's not and never was intended for. At the same time, it saddens me that the browsers capabilities are restricted as much as they are.

I was expecting a game and watch or a point a click type of game, the browser is just not good enough for a game that requires animation.
