I cannot get around this error and hope to find an expert here on the board. I will shortly explain what state my Wii was in, what I already did and tried, and what state it is in now.

I modded my Wii ages ago and decided to fire it up again and update all the tools. I followed https://wii.hacks.guide/ to re-install the homebrew channel (update it). Also took a NAND backup. However, when I started the Priiloader Installer, after a few seconds I got this message:

System Menu version invalid or not vanilla (v65535 / 0xFFFF)

Someone on another forum suggested the mistake was having this old, German mod of Priiloader installed: Priiloader v0.6(beta v2) (German Mod: BöhserOnkel)

So I uninstalled it. But the error was still there. Currently I do not have any Priiloader installed on my system. I guess I could probably install an older version from back then without any errors.

ModMii
I proceeded to follow the ModMii guide "ModMii Wizard" completely, in order to update my system. I stayed on 4.1E, but updated everything else from the guide. But that didn't do it either. Still the same error.

hacks.guide/cios
In a last attempt I followed the guide from https://wii.hacks.guide/cios to update cios according to their docs. Didn't help either. Priiloader still fails with the same error.

So I ended up with this setup:
sysCheck v2.1.0b5 von Double_A

I don't know where to go from here? Install an old version of Priiloader and then attempt to update to 4.3E, since the error is about the system menu? But I don't want to lose any data from the Wii. Happy about any hints.

Drag and drop your syscheck.csv onto modmii.exe and it will tell you what to do. Alternatively run the main Modmii Wizard again and this time choose a different system menu version so it gets changed/updated

The issue is your system menu version is customized at 65535

Thank you!

1. I cannot use ModMii for my SysCheck, because the SysCheck that is working on my system is not the ModMii Edition.

Instead, I found this online tool with the following recommendations: https://syscheck.wii-homebrew.com/#!YTk3MDVlZmE4ODlm

Update IOS52, IOS58, IOS223[37], IOS224[57], IOS246[38], IOS247[53], IOS248[55], IOS249[56], IOS250[57] and IOS251[58]. *
Install IOS245[37]. *
Remove IOS237 with the AnyTitle Deleter Mod.

So how do I update these? Don't want to do anything wrong :D Especially while I do not have a Priiloader installed.

2. What exactly does it mean that my system menu is "customized at 65535"? I'd like to understand.

Oh, just realised I'm talking to the developer of ModMii @XFlak. In this case, maybe you have an idea why ModMii edition of SysCheck fails? Error:

IMG_5164.png

Is there an error log somewhere that you'd need? Because this doesn't look very useful to me.
Thanks a lot, buddy!

Your homebrew channel is out of date likely causing the issue

You said you used the modmii wizard, but it doesn't look like you did in your syscheck.

If the syscheck was taken before following the main Modmii mizard guide, u should be able to run syscheck modmii edition now

Are you able to share where you got sysCheck v2.1.0b5? I want to check it's meta.xml for something

I will look into updating the homebrew channel and try to run the modmii edition of syscheck again.

I did use the modmii wizard, but I followed the guide https://wii.hacks.guide/cios afterwards.

The syscheck on the bottom of my post is my current one. I changed nothing afterwards yet. But I tried the syscheck modmii edition also right after following the modmii wizard and it had the same error.

Regarding sysCheck v2.1.0b5, I can't. I downloaded it over 10 years ago. I could upload my syscheck folder in /apps/ for you, if that does the job. I will do it once I'm back home later today.

Please do share it :)

In the meantime if you edit your syscheck.csv in notepad and change "sysCheck v2.1.0b5" to "SysCheck ME" ModMii will proceed to analyze it for you. It will recommend some redundant steps that you have already done but it is still safe to follow (i.e. it will tell you to install HBC v1.1.2 or v1.1.5, system menu IOSs and cIOSs that you already have installed like in slots 11,20,30,40,50,52,60,70,80,248,249,250,251). If you choose to do this, you can first disable ModMii's extra brick protection option in order to reduce the redundant recommendations. Optionally re-enable this afterwards.

Ultimately all you need to do is install a stock 4.1E, 4.2E or 4.3E (i.e. version should not be 65535); you already have unstubbed system menu IOSs installed to slots 60/70/80 otherwise that would be necessary as well to avoid brick. Once this is done, the Priiloader Installer will work.

P.S.; you've inspired me to add the following to my beta build of ModMii
1718626301784.png

If the version of syscheck you are going to share does not need HBC v1.0.7 to work, I will mention it here as well as a backup option

edit: can you also tell me what version of the HBC you have installed? While in the HBC, press the home button, and version info will appear in the top corner

@XFlak:
sysCheck2.0.1: https://mega.nz/file/RNcQwYJL#iBj65vd7E70GDXF2ALMzarzlyYwFyFlcgX2Fu0KBZT8

Homebrew channel is on version 1.1.5 (IOS58 v24.32). I'm not sure which version it was prior to following the modmii wizard. But sysCheck 2.0.1 works on both, while the modmii edition worked on neither.

Ultimately all you need to do is install a stock 4.1E, ...
I'm on 4.1E. When I tell the modmii wizard I want 4.1E it doesn't overwrite it, though. So the system menu stays at v65535. How can I install a "clean" system menu without upgrading to 4.2E/4.3E? And do I lose any data doing so?

I changed the syscheck.cv like you described. The suggestions from modmii include upgrading to 4.3E:

Screenshot 2024-06-17 at 18.20.25.png

The update for your beta is nice, however, it looks like the version of the homebrew channel is not the reason why syscheck modmii edition is not working on my console.

yes that's right, I'm not sure what's causing your issue with syscheck... hmmm, do you mind testing some stuff for me? Specifically, open up apps\SysCheckME\meta.xml in notepad and change "--forceNoAHBPROT=false" to "--forceNoAHBPROT=true". If that doesn't work try erasing the line with "<no_ios_reload/>", and if that doesn't work, try erasing or renaming the meta.xml file entirely.

The version of syscheck you got working does not have ahbprot\no-ios-reload arguments so I suspect it's one of these things that are causing the issue.

Does SysCheck HDE (Hacksden Edition) fail for you also? https://github.com/modmii/modmii.github.io/raw/master/temp/SysCheckHDE.zip

Also, can you clarify when SysCheckME fails? Does it fail immediately or after telling it to run the syscheck?

Back to your specific issue, it's safe to follow the steps to install 4.2E or 4.3E, you won't lose anything

edit: also perhaps you can test if this version works? I suspect it will fail as it too required ahbprot\no-ios-reload arguments
https://github.com/modmii/modmii.github.io/raw/master/temp/syscheckb19.zip

1- get the 4.1E system menu from somewhere
2- use yawm mod mii edition since if you accidentally download wrong region yawm will refuse to install it also you wont lose you data with this method
note: just dont turn off the wii during installation of the new sys menu and all should be fine and before doing check if you can use bootmii in boot2 so is even safer

if still dont work you'll need to update to 4.3 following this guide: https://www.rwiihacks.com/tutorials/32004fix/ just dont forget to install IOS 80 before installing the wad you downloaded

@XFlak: The results are pretty much the opposite of what you expected :yay:

yes that's right, I'm not sure what's causing your issue with syscheck... hmmm, do you mind testing some stuff for me? --forceNoAHBPROT=true: FAILS
erased <no_ios_reload/>: FAILS
erased meta.xml: FAILS

ModMii edition always fails at the end of running through the ioses, which is why I tested this by selecting only ios3 (fails faster then). Maybe something doesn't work when trying to access/write to the SD card?

SysCheck HDE (Hacksden Edition): runs through, but then fails when confirming to show the results by clicking A.

Post automatically merged:

if still dont work you'll need to update to 4.3 following this guide: https://www.rwiihacks.com/tutorials/32004fix/ just dont forget to install IOS 80 before installing the wad you downloaded

So what I would maybe try next is the following: Take the results of the syscheck from Hacksden Edition and feed it to modmii wizard. Replace the step in the guide that tells me to install 4.3E with installing 4.1E with yawm mod mii edition instead. Does that sound good? I would be installing some IOS/etc. for 4.3, but staying on 4.1, right? Could that lead to problems? Re-installing 4.1 while being on 4.1 does keep my data as well?

IOS 80 is for 4.3?

So Hacksden Edition syscheck file fails in modmii wizard due to region. syscheckb19 works fine though and has a different outcome. This time it suggests re-installing 4.1E:

Should I proceed with this guide re-installing 4.1E .wad and the suggested stub IOSs? Here is the generated guide:

Important Notes

This guide does not require a WiFi connection on your Wii.
Make sure the files ModMii downloaded are on your SD Card, and your SD Card is inserted in the Wii.
If you don't have an SD Card, you can still accomplish most things using a Hard Drive formatted as FAT32 in place of an SD Card (SD is notably required for Bootmii and NAND backup).
Use ModMii's USB-Loader Setup feature if you need help formatting your HDD as FAT32.
Make sure to always plug your hard drive into usb port0 - the one nearest the edge of the Wii.
If you don't have an SD Card or Hard Drive, you can launch apps and install WADs over WiFi to your Wii from your PC. Just open apps (boot.dol\elf files) or WADs with ModMii.
Note that some apps may not work properly or support all features if they require an SD or HDD.
An SD Card is recommended, but not necessary, to fully softmod your console.
Check if your SD Card has a lock switch and make sure it's disabled.
If you get errors during any of the steps try reformatting your SD Card (or HDD) as FAT32.
If your Wii ever freezes, hold the power button on the Wii for 5 seconds to power it off then try again.
Never uninstall a System Menu or IOS.
When updating your softmod you should always overwrite old mods by installing new ones, do not try to "Delete everything" or "Start from scratch".
To update your mods in the future you can use the ModMii Wizard as if it was your first time, or even better, update only what's outdated using ModMii's Syscheck Updater Wizard and reduce the number of steps!
If you accept an official Nintendo update after modding the Wii, you may lose some of your modifications and have to reinstall them.
Do not install untested WADs/themes without Priiloader, Bootmii and a nand backup.
It's probably unnecessary, but you should disconnect all peripherals from the Wii during the modding procedure unless instructed otherwise. This includes gamecube memory cards, gamecube controllers, Wii Speak, etc.

Updating your Wii Hacks

Install WADs

YAWM ModMii Edition stands for Yet Another Wad Manager ModMii Edition (aka yawmME). A WAD Manager will allow you to install "WADs" containing things like updates and other content for your console, like IOSs, custom IOSs (or cIOSs), or other downloadable content, which can be all packed into WADs and installed to your Wii. Think of a WAD like a zip file but for the Wii.

WARNING: WADs can also be uninstalled, and if you're not careful you can brick your console by uninstalling or even installing the wrong WAD. The WAD Manager you're using, YAWM ModMii Edition, has some extra brick protection built in to restrict someone from doing catastrophic things like uninstalling any System Menu WAD, or required System Menu IOS, or a dozen other things which could potentially result in a brick if you don't know what you're doing. Stick to your ModMii guide and you'll be fine.

On your Wii, load "YAWM ModMii Edition" from the HomeBrew Channel.
Choose your source device using left and right, most likely "Wii SD Slot", and Press A.
Install your custom list of 1 WADs found in the spoiler below.
Be careful not to install any additional WADs that may have been previously saved in this folder (they may be safe, but I cannot say for sure).
Hold + for 2 seconds to select all the WADs in the folder.
Alternatively, you can select or deselect your WADs individually by navigating to each one and hitting +
After you've marked all the WADs listed below, press A on any marked WAD to install them all.
Confirm the total number selected for installation is 1, then press A again to install.
If any WADs fail to install properly please retry installing them.
After successfully installing all the WADs, press any button to continue, then press the Home button on your Wiimote to exit YAWM ModMii Edition.

Here's your unique list of 1 WADs to install:
SystemMenu_4.1E_v450

You have some extra IOSs installed on your Wii that are unnecessary. Optionally recover some space by navigating to the WAD/STUBS folder and repeating the steps above to install the 13 stub IOS WADs below. Ignore this for any slots you intentionally installed (e.g. for Fakemote support).

STUB-IOS3-64-v404
STUB-IOS4-64-v404
STUB-IOS10-64-v404
STUB-IOS16-64-v404
STUB-IOS51-64-v404
STUB-IOS90-64-v404
STUB-IOS202-64-v404
STUB-IOS222-64-v404
STUB-IOS223-64-v404
STUB-IOS224-64-v404
STUB-IOS237-64-v404
STUB-IOS246-64-v404
STUB-IOS247-64-v404

Note: You can recover a bit more space by following the steps above except pressing - instead of + to uninstall the 13 stub IOS WADs. Do NOT uninstall any other WADs unless you know what you are doing; see warning about uninstalling WADs above.

WARNING: Whenever you install a new System Menu, like you just did, Priiloader will get uninstalled unless you used yawmME and were prompted and chose to retain it. If you accidentally removed Priiloader (re)install it immediately.

Install and Configure Priiloader

Priiloader loads just before the System Menu and is invisible unless holding down the reset button while powering on the console. Not only is Priiloader a great form of brick protection, it can be customized to automatically boot straight to the System Menu (default behavior) with patched features (aka "System Menu Hacks"), or directly to the HBC or a user defined homebrew (e.g. a USB-Loader, Crazy Intro Videos, etc). Click here for directions on "Installing a file" (aka "dol" file) in Priiloader to launch user defined homebrew. Custom forwarder dols that are compatible with Priiloader can be built from ModMii's Advanced Downloads menu.

You can navigate the Priiloader menu using a Wiimote, GameCube controller, USB Keyboard, or the Power/Reset buttons on the front of the console itself similar to Bootmii (if using the front buttons you will not be able to access the system menu hacks, file/dol & password menus).

Launch the "Priiloader Installer" from the Homebrew Channel.
After the Priiloader Installer loads, press + to install it.
When successful the installer should display "Install done!"
Press A to exit back to the Homebrew Channel.
Access Priiloader by powering off the Wii, then hold down the Reset button while powering on your Wii until you see the Priiloader menu.
You can also start Priiloader by loading the "Priiloader Launcher" via the HBC, or by holding escape on a USB connected keyboard while turning on your Wii.
From the Priiloader menu, select "System Menu Hacks" and enable some system menu hacks.

Be careful not to haphazardly enable just any hack, for example do not enable "Lock System Menu with Black Screen".

RECOMMENDED HACKS*
Block Disc Updates
Block Online Updates
Region Free EVERYTHING
480p graphics fix in system menu
Remove Deflicker
Wiimmfi Patch v4
Remove NoCopy Save File Protection
*Your available System Menu hacks may vary.

Scroll down to "save settings" and press A, then press B to go back to Priiloader's main menu.
Optional: Autoboot a USB-Loader Channel instead of the System Menu.
Select to "Load/Install File". Select your forwarder dol (e.g. USBLoader_IDCL_Channel_Forwarder.dol) and press A to install it. Wait for it to install and return to the main menu.
Did you know that custom forwarder dols can be built from ModMii's Advanced Downloads menu?
Navigate to "Settings" and change "Autoboot" to "Installed File".
Navigate to "Homebrew Channel" and press A to launch it.

Pro tip! If you update or (re)install any System Menu it generally REMOVES Priiloader and you should reinstall it immediately to stay protected. Only YAWM ModMii Edition allows you to safely retain Priiloader while (re)installing a System Menu.

Another Pro tip! If you keep a hard drive plugged into your Wii at all times you can enable "Ignore standby" in Priiloader's settings so your Wii turns off completely by default. This will stop the hard drive from spinning 24/7 when it's not being used.

After modding your Wii

To play Wii (and Gamecube) games off a USB hard drive, run the USB-Loader Setup wizard from ModMii's Main Menu.
Optionally remove unnecessary files using ModMii's "File Cleanup & App Updater" feature to prevent amateurs from using potentially dangerous apps.
Consider making another NAND backup so that if you ever need restore it you won't need to repeat the entire softmod process.
At any point you can run SysCheck on your Wii to get a sysCheck.csv log of your installed softmods; in the future you can check if any of your mods are outdated by opening your log with the latest version of ModMii.
Periodically check for updates to the apps on your SD card or USB Hard drive by using ModMii's "File Cleanup & App Updater" feature. It will scan your device for ModMii's auto-updating apps and offer to check for updates.
Download the latest Homebrew apps to your SD Card or FAT32 USB Hard Drive so they can be launched via the HBC or forwarder channels.
Download some Wii related PC tools or Just for Fun Wii apps like emulators or cheat codes from ModMii Classic's Download Page 2.
Grab the Homebrew Browser or the Open Shop Channel for Windows from ModMii or the provided links to easily download many other popular apps right from your Wii or PC!
Some other great libraries of Homebrew applications can be found at wiibrew.org, wiidatabase.de, oscwii.org and of course gbatemp.
To manually "install" apps, download your homebrew and you should find a boot.dol (or boot.elf) file and possibly an icon.png and meta.xml.
For the HBC to read your SD/USB correctly, your card must be structured SD:/apps/application name/boot.dol\elf
Some apps require a meta.xml be saved in the same place as the boot.dol\elf to work properly (icon.png is always optional).
If you have a dol or elf file not named "boot", rename it boot.dol\elf, otherwise it will not be recognized by the HBC (not required if using Priiloader to install a file).
Check out some of my custom Forwarder Channels to launch your favourite homebrew straight from the System Menu.
Get a new theme for your Wii Menu! Confirm you have Priiloader installed before installing themes, then open mym themes\files using ModMii or ThemeMii Mod to convert them to csm files for your specific system menu version. Or check out the huge library of themes available at www.wiithemer.org, a website that also converts MYMs to CSMs for you on the fly. CSM files can then be installed to your Wii using MyMenuify Mod. ThemeMii Mod and MyMenuify Mod are both available on ModMii Classic's Download Page 2.
"Expand" your Wii's 500MB internal memory for more WiiWare and Virtual Console games by having it load the System Menu from external storage instead. Use ModMii's SNEEK installer and Emulated NAND builder to get started.
You can also use your Wii's nand.bin backup as an Emulated NAND instead of having ModMii build one from scratch. To extract the files from a nand.bin backup to use as an Emulated NAND, simply open the nand.bin file using ModMii.
Install Fakemote to an unused IOS slot like 247 to add support for DS3 and DS4 controllers. This can also be done using ModMii Classic's Advanced Downloads Menu by choosing the latest FM (Fakemote) version of d2x in ModMii's options.
Check out some Crazy Intro Videos to customize how your Wii starts up (SD Card required).
Bring back WiiConnect24 to your Wii! The RiiConnect24 Patcher restores functionality to Wii Mail and various Nintendo Channels such as Forecast, News, Everybody Votes, Nintendo, Check Mii Out, and more! You can get this tool from from ModMii Classic's Download Page 2.
Note: if you used ModMii 6.6.0 or higher to install your System Menu IOS, you can use all of RiiConnect24's features without having to be on System Menu version 4.3 or (re)install a different IOS80. ModMii's RC24 compatible System Menu IOSs can be identified by their "ModMii" tag in SysCheck reports.

Credits, Supporting Apps, and Sources

ModMii was written entirely by yours truly, XFlak. Trust me, no one else is crazy enough to try to maintain a batch file that has grown so large and 'all over the place'. But without the help of many other very talented people ModMii would not exist. Some people have contributed supporting files or programs, others have shared their knowledge, some have provided ideas and others have given their time.

I have tried my best to recognize everyone's contribution to ModMii regardless of how big or small it is. If I've forgotten someone, please notify me and I'll add them to the credits as quickly as possible.

Support ModMii

ModMii started out as a small side-project back in 2010 as a simple NUS Auto Downloader script, and now the changelog is taller than me! I started this project in my 20s in my spare time and since then I've gotten married and had not 1, not 2, not 3, but FOUR boys, all ~2 years apart. I love being able to share my love for gaming and for the Wii with them, and with all of you! This is a passion project that has easily taken over 8000-9000 hours of just my time alone, and that's not counting all the hours spent from the legions of devs and testers who've supported ModMii over the years.

Not knowing that much about computers other than some excel tricks, I slowly built more advanced features on top of my original less efficient code that I'd love to rewrite if it wasn't such a daunting task. Throughout the journey I learned a lot from not just those in the credits list, but the incredibly supportive Wii community as a whole. I've gone from just being a "numbers guy" to my family's go to "tech guy", and I have this project, community and followers to thank for it.

ModMii is entirely free to use and ad free. Donations can optionally be made to the author using the button below, or pick your favourite contributor from the credits and check if they have a donations page.

If you're like me and it's difficult to show support with donations, consider taking a minute to vote or share your feedback at the official ModMii page on gbatemp. I always enjoy hearing feedback about your ModMii experience.

Or would you suggest following the previous generated guide instead to install 4.3E?

Can you share the 2 syschecks from HDE and b19?

When you say HDE fails in modmii due to region, what do you mean? Is it saying you have a region mismatch and should proceed to use the region change wizard to "change" to your current region?

Installing 4.1 is safe so long as you have IOS60 (unstubbed) installed, which you should (and if you don't yawmme should prevent you from installing). Same goes for 4.3 except with IOS80 (and 4.2 with IOS70)

I already did here.

So which would you recommend?

Not sure how I missed that, thanks! so the HDE syscheck reports your system menu version as Systemmenue 4.1Ï (v65535), so it's detecting a mismatch, but in b19 it's reported as 4.1E which is aligned with your PAL region. Basically the analysis modmii is doing is correct based on the input provided.

Assuming your custom system menu didn't touch any other system files (likely since your region is still PAL), should be no need to do a region "change", but if you did it too should resolve your issue. Simply installing a stock 4.1E, 4.2E or 4.3E system menu should get everything up and running and allow the priiloader installer to run

There's really no substantial differences between 4.1-4.3; personally I'd give 4.2 a slight advantage just because bannerbomb v2 is a bit easier\faster to access than exploits on 4.1 or 4.3, but realistically this is done once and that's it anyway

After you install a stock system menu, can you check if syscheck ME starts working again for you? Perhaps something about your custom system menu version itself is causing the issue... in which case a nand backup from before installing a new version may be helpful in the future if we want to try and improve it... so perhaps start by making a nand backup if you haven't already

Thanks! I installed 4.1E as described in my previous comment.

Everything works now: Priiloader is installed, syscheck ModMii edition doesn't crash any longer.
