Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon could potentially just be the big surprise of Nintendo's upcoming direct, as trademark filings from Europe reveal. Both listings just popped up in the OHIM database today and were filed by Nintendo.

The rule is 2 generations per console.

The only exception was with the GBA, and it was just because that console had the shortest lifespan of all Nintendo handhelds.

Gameboy - Enhanced Gameboy (Color)
Gen 1 and Gen 2

Gameboy Advanced - Gen 3

Nintendo DS - Enhanced Nintendo DS (DSi)
Gen 4
Gen 5

It only makes sense that Gen 6 and Gen 7 arrives for the 3DS and it's enhanced counterpart (n3DS)

GB and GBC only had 1 gen each.
And GBA technically had 2 gens. gen 1 for the remakes.

Gold and Silver worked on Game Boy. Just like Gen 5 worked on DS. It isn't a DSi gen as much as just a DS gen with DSi features.

keyword worked
Doesn't make them GB mono games.

Want more proof??
Try to change the color palette of Gold or Silver at boot. Every Gameboy mono game played on a Gameboy Color can be played with colored palettes that can be manually selected while the Gameboy logo is showing at boot, if you can't change the palette then is a Gameboy Color game.
Or try them on a Super Gameboy
the Super Gameboy was like a Gameboy almost Color. You'll get color out of those games but not as detailed as the Gameboy Color offer. if Gold and Silver are really regular Gameboy games then the Super Gameboy should offer more colors that when running on a Gameboy Color.

GBC is as much a new console as DSi was and New3DS is. Just higher clock with some new minor features. Almost all games that were made for GBC worked on GB.
Really the only exception to this I can think of off the top of my head is Pokemon Crystal

Then we can say the same with the Gamecube, Wii and Wii U.
Minor features. They use similar hardware, of course (at least GC and Wii do) but the OS are different, controllers are wildly different, games are different, online is different, accessories are different, shape is different...
