ROM Hack Translation Need help for Zoids Saga GBA English translation project

Up till now, I noticed that games such as Zoids never released outside of Japan with the exception of Zoids Legacy and Zoids Battle Legend which are both international version of Zoids Saga II and Zoids VS II respectively. As a fan, I have all three Zoids Saga series (I, II, and III Fuzors) including Zoids VS series (I and Batlle Legend) and Zoids Saga DS: Legend of Arcadia. I may not be a great translator since I was still considered as beginner in Japanese learning added with understanding terms from anime and fan translated video games (I'm still learning though) but at least I have been trying my best in translating the first game of the series. Zoids Saga, that's the first game of the Zoids Saga series but also the reason why the series along with Zoids VS were good enough and at least enjoyable before finally turn into a lazier storytelling like Zoids Infinity Blast (I haven't try the other games but the rest have rather complex gameplay, mostly because I don't understand the instruction in Japanese well but there's one thing I know though....Zoids games have turn very downgrade nowadays made lazily by developers without caring much of showing what makes the older games great that time).

Right now, I managed to translate the texts in the dialogue (Take note that I didn't even extract the in-game Japanese texts because I had no knowledge of how to use hacking program or utilities to extract the texts from the game into the notepad for translating them. I used Google Translate scan to help translate the texts but I also did the translation a bit myself for some terms or sentences that I understand what they meant from what I learned. Any translation mistake revealed by Google Translate scan will be fixed, edited, or polished so that the texts make more sense from one dialogue to another). I also tried to translate the detail format written in Japanese such as the Japanese characters in cover menu, character naming after pressing start, team data (I will edit that later), team menu (Some texts cannot be read by Google Translate scan so the unreadable text will be written as unable to identify in-game Japanese characters or kanji for translation, some of them are left blank because of this issue. If anyone know what the Japanese kanji look like, I will try to manually translate from Google Translate by self-drawing the Japanese character that the translating program couldn't read from scan).

Since I have no knowledge in using hacking program for changing the in-game texts, I need someone who know how to hack the texts using hacking program to insert the translated text but I could also use some help in translating the Japanese texts better.

Note: I also volunteered to help in the Zoids Saga DS translation project too as editor and help arrange or polish the rough or choppy translation made by the owner of the thread

Anyone have any interest in translating this Zoids Saga GBA? Anyone willing to help me in this translating project?

Amy_7007 I would love to see this game translated so I wish you all the luck in the world! I have recently been looking into this game again. Sadly I'm burnt out from translating Fuzors. I'm probably 98% complete but play testing takes so much time and there is always some little thing I missed. And doing it alone is tough.

I would suggest finding a hex editor you like. It makes all of the difference. For Fuzors I got lucky last year and found 010Editor and it made all the difference. (I have been revisiting the project every year to see if I could make it happen.) 010Editor after install was showing the Japanese and allowing me to copy and paste it into Google translate. This cut out two steps in my previous process making everything soooo much faster. Sadly Zoids Saga I uses a different character encoding scheme than Fuzors. Kind of like a backwards Shift_JIS encoding.

In Fuzors the hex value for "start" would be:

826d 8287 8281 828d 8285

*Which is just Shift_JIS encoding.

But in Zoids Saga I the hex value is:

6d82 8782 8182 8d82 8582

*Reversed

Which means that the hex editor wont show the Japanese. I haven't found a way of making a custom character set to fix this or what the correct character encoding scheme is.

I would focus on figuring that out first. Then I would start dumping the text positions and the Japanese from the game. Here is an example of what mine looked like (just in notepad) for Fuzors:

The first line is the name of the character talking, the second is the copy and pasted Japanese, third the rough Google translation, and finally the forth line is what I put into the game.

This will allow you to take the rough Google translation, polish it and see if you can make it fit into the same amount of space. My assembly skills are nonexistent so I couldn't even consider expanding the game code but got lucky there was a single hex character font in the game already. Allowing for easy text injection. Sadly I don't believe you will be so lucky. I have found no evidence of a single hex character font in Zoids Saga I. This will make re-injecting the new text difficult.

Here are some examples of what I already have translated (a couple years ago) and re-inject into the game. I always start with the zoid names or the player name to help learn the character encoding and you get a lot of bang of the buck. Sadly years ago I didn't capture the positions in the file but a search in a hex editor will easily find that.

The first line is the name of the character talking, the second is the copy and pasted Japanese, third the rough Google translation, and finally the forth line is what I put into the game.

This will allow you to take the rough Google translation, polish it and see if you can make it fit into the same amount of space. My assembly skills are nonexistent so I couldn't even consider expanding the game code but got lucky there was a single hex character font in the game already. Allowing for easy text injection. Sadly I don't believe you will be so lucky. I have found no evidence of a single hex character font in Zoids Saga I. This will make re-injecting the new text difficult.

Here are some examples of what I already have translated (a couple years ago) and re-inject into the game. I always start with the zoid names or the player name to help learn the character encoding and you get a lot of bang of the buck. Sadly years ago I didn't capture the positions in the file but a search in a hex editor will easily find that.

It's a good news for fans to hear that the translating project for Zoids Saga Fuzor isn't dead yet. That translation from the former translator only translates the menu fully in the patch he or she made and never continue beyond that afterward. How many years has it been since the news of the patch came out? I was still in elementary school and obsessed in collecting Zoids game for Gameboy and Gamecube emulators back then. It's been more than 5 years (Maybe more than 10 years to be exact. It was 2007 when my obsession in collecting Zoids games to play for GBA and Gamecube began). My assembly skills are nonexistent so I couldn't even consider expanding the game code but got lucky there was a single hex character font in the game already. Allowing for easy text injection. Sadly I don't believe you will be so lucky. I have found no evidence of a single hex character font in Zoids Saga I. This will make re-injecting the new text difficult.

Here are some examples of what I already have translated (a couple years ago) and re-inject into the game. I always start with the zoid names or the player name to help learn the character encoding and you get a lot of bang of the buck. Sadly years ago I didn't capture the positions in the file but a search in a hex editor will easily find that.

I'm back. After the college opening, I finally have four days of holidays now. I continued the translation further after the free explore start while adding more details of the main character's position in the map (There's no button for opening map in the first game). I also managed to translate the dialogue of the NPCs on the 3rd floor of the MC's room, 4th floor of Arcadia, until the 2nd floor of Arcadia castle including Jack's dialogue with the Prince. Good news Amy I have managed to dump ( in theory ) the entire script using an application called Cartographer. There seems to be 976 different text pointer blocks. Some consist of only ine line of text and others are long conversations. I have also translated up until the first town and re-injected it into the game. In theory we should be able to use an application named Atlas to take our translated script dump and change the pointer locations and (easily ??) re-injected it into unused area of the game file.

I'll experiment with the re-injection but even if I can't get it to work it can be done by hand. It will just take a lot longer.

If you want to work on the translation there are some limitations to be aware of that are very important.

Hard Limitations:
------------------------------
1.) If a character's portrait is on the screen each line of text has a MAX length of 21 characters. ( Ex: Regina, Jack, Earth, ... )
2.) If there is NO character's portrait on the screen each line of text has a MAX length of 26 characters. ( Ex: King / Queen Arcadia, ... )
3.) Each block of text has a MAX of 3 lines in length. Four or more scroll of the screen too fast to read.

I haven't had to make too many modifications to the original text. But punctuation is a lot more expendable.

The limitation would be the focus of how to fit the entire translated text into one dialogue box without troubling the game too hard (I'm talking about the case where the texts would get cut off in the text box during conversation. Also, I'm only going to translate at weekend or holiday (College has started today so things are changing including the schedule of working on the projects while focusing on school. I have also managed to dump the script better than before making re-injecting it easy. I believe I am about 40% complete with translating, re-injecting, and play testing of the story. Scenario 5 has been a lot more complex than I expected and isn't as polished as I would like but functions.

Sadly work has been hectic lately and not much has been done. I'll see what I can do when I can.

Holy, you're faster than I did. I was still in the beginning part of the game because lots of schedule ahead. Oh well....you already did a lot, @gared531. I couldn't help out much but I guess I can only help with the polishing later. Good job, I will help with the fix later in case there are typo, choppy, or others. I will keep going with the manual translate either way since I'm already progress a bit further than before even though I will have to stop again and focus on my schedule now

@gared531, by the way...do you need someone to play test the result once you're finished? I would like to playtest it immediately as soon as you finished the in-game text translation, I will give the report to you in case there's a bug or glitch in the game after translation
