Hacking is installing bootmii the only way to get the udpated hbc?

Use the hackmii installer.

It will let you install just the new homebrew channel without installing bootmii.

The hackmii installer comes with the option to choose what you want to install from between hbc, dvdx, and bootmii. You can install all or one or none.

Read here the new 1.0.3 HBC has been released in the new HackMii installer v0.2 READ ME

To break it down it works now (SDHC support) and even if this doesnt work for you there is a fix for 1.0.2 just do a bit of reading in Wii hacking forum.
