I discovered a few days ago it is possible to bypass the region lock on the Wii U's gamepad. Searching for about an hour turned up "it's impossible" or "wait until someone figures out how to hack the gamepad's firmware." I guess nobody noticed? Figured it was worth sharing here so that anybody else trying to do this doesn't run into a wall.

Quoting myself from the Retro Game Boards Wii U Appreciation and Collecting Thread cause I can't post links apparently.
If you try to sync it the proper way, using the button on the system, it’ll sync but you’ll get an error about the Wii U Gamepad needing an update. Dead end.

But, if you have a hacked Wii U, you can install “System Config Tool,” an app intended for debug Wii Us. In there you can break a lot of things on your Wii U so be careful but under “Wii U GamePad (DRC) Settings” you can sync gamepads. Doesn’t seem like it’d be very useful but if you sync an out of region gamepad in here, you won’t get prompted about a gamepad update and can bypass the region lock entirely.

That's all you need to do. I have a JP region gamepad synced and working with my US region Wii U, but there's no reason to think it won't work for any region gamepad with any region Wii U.

Thanks for the info! Does it continue to work after you turn off/ turn on the machine or you need to resynch them every time you boot?

Do you know if there is a possibility to flash the US firmware to the JP gamepad?

Yeah it continues to be sync'd after you turn things off so you don't need to resync.

AFAIK no Wii U Gamepad firmware hacks exist at this time. When I was looking back in July people speculated that someday, maybe, it could possibly happen.

Thanks for your answer! I will try it as soon I have the system with me (i'm not at home for a few more months :-/ )

So, now i want to put my Wii U to Region Free to play with that gamepad but I don't know how to install the aplication: "System Config. Tool" I searched from Google and i cannot find the true path to download this aplic and make it work, if someone can PLEASE explain me how to install this, I would be in debt with her/him.
Thanks and please, see my post! TnT

The link to the tutorial doesnt work, and i cant find the system config tool. I also have a Japanese replacement gamepad to replace the one which my kids has managed to lose somewhere, but i shopped at ebay and didnt specify the region i belong to North euroipe. The gamepad has now arrived, and it comes from Japan. Afaik. region is hardwired and they regulate region management in the upgrade process. Now it makes perfect sense to sort the problem by not upgrading, but the System Config Tool cannot be found? Im assuming that the program is loade by the use of SD mem card formatted to fat32, but that doesnt work if i dont have thepTool.
WiiUGamepadRegion hast been seen since last year, so i dare ask if you can help us.

Here's a -snip-. I've never used it. I've just taken it from a website I trust (elotrolado.net). I found a tutorial in Spanish and it says that it should be installed on rednand only. Don't install it on sysnand. Be careful what you do...

I have question. What do you think, will system config tool work with Haxchi or Coldboot Haxchi?
Did anyone try?

Hi bros. I got read the System config tool installation. But it use the Rednand and WUP installer 1.0 to install it.

But now, can i use the Mocha CFW (boot from wiiuexploit.xyz) and WUP installer 1.3 GX to install it.? Since this is the newest hack way.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.
