I just bought a PS2 Slim to a friend
I am completely newbie into PS2 scene..

What is the best way to play backup games on a PS2 slim?

Burned DVD? USB? HDD?
Any way to mod the PS2 silm to plug an HDD?

And what hack should I use?

Thanks

EDIT: PS2 model: SCPH 70004

You need install Freemcboot into a PS2 memory card, get a new one (get a Chinese one, it doesn't matter) so with it you can launch OPL to play PS2 games. I don't recommend usb flash drives as the FMVs shug in games, there's compatibility lists for usb/smb/hdd see and decide for yourself. The SMB method is the best for slim users you can use a router or even a Raspberry Pie to connect through ethernet, even then you need to look up tutorials on how to set it up properly. I've seen some solder an IDE adapter to the motherboard and connecting an hdd to it, but only the early slims revisions (like the one you have) have the internals on them, without mentioning you need soldering skills to do that.
Playing burned discs is not a bad idea but you need to solder a modchip if you don't have one installed already, and a functioning laser.

Yours is a 7000x, which is Mechapwn compatible. Get a memory card with FreeMCBoot above all else, that's your entrypoint.

step 1: burn freedvdboot dvd
step 2: create freemcboot memory card
step 3: install OPL as you wish, smb streaming should be the preference

^^^ This. If you don't have storage on your home network for the PS2 games, you can always buy a ~$20-$30 micro router dedicated and directly connected to your PS2 Slim and then use a USB flash drive or USB HDD to store all your games.

Using a USB drive via network may seem counter intuitive to plugging the USB directly in to the PS2, but PS2 has USB 1.1 which is limited to around 20MB/sec. MX4ISO is faster and uses SD cards. FreeDVDBoot and burning every game is faster still, and the fastest is SMB which will cap out at around 80MB/sec.

Hello, I managed to stumble across this through google. I found a PS2 Slim, but it's a 90001 model with an R Chassis. According to the various tutorials found throughout, FreeMCBoot does not work on this model and chassis.

In terms of getting this to run game backups, am I out of luck (at least without hard modding)? Or is there some alternative method out there?

The disk drive still works, if that helps anything.

I agree 100% with the first two steps. Step 3 is a good step as well but you could also use the MechaPwn exploit to enable playing Import and Backup discs. Just be aware that PS2 Backup discs require patching to be read by the console. I created a new patching program that fixes issues that occur with the old one. You can find it at psx-place.

If I personally was in the situation of the Original Poster I would use FreeDVDBoot to install FreeMCBoot on my memory card. Then I would install Mechapwn. Finally I would install OPL and setup a SMB to reduce the amount of discs I'd need to burn. OPL would take care of most games and for those that are problematic you could burn discs that have been patched for Master Disc / Mechapwn. So really I'd just recommend adding that 4th step.

I llike Play Station, but unfortunately, I don't know how to hack it, and I cannot play any game I want on it. That is why I still play games on my personal computer sometimes. One of my favorite games I play on my computer is Counter-Strike Global Offensive. I have played it for more than five years, and I can't stop doing it. I also started to make money there by selling skins I win in matches on https://skincashier.com. I don't make much money, but it is a nice bonus considering I don't do anything except play.

You mean PS2 or PS1? It's pretty straight forward for PS2, while PS1 is a bit of a hassle..

Or when your player dies, you can say in code, if enemy exists, do nothing, but if enemy does not exist, then create enemy at certain spot. (This would be a pain tho for lots of emeies)
