I agree with you... except for one game in particular.

Which is Suikoden Tierkries (Fail spelling

)
Whenever the MC spoke (VA and TEXT) I usually would get
quite annoyed.

I agree with you completely.

The only silent protagonist games I ever liked were Shin Megami Tensei/Persona ones. Everything else I immediately stop playing once I find out my guy is mute

So you actually never played Golden Sun/Chrono Trigger and other awesome RPG's?

Can't believe no one has mentioned the classic Pokemon G/S dialogue yet.

omg, i loved that!

Well I dont personally mind mute MC's. On the other hand I don't mind talking MC's either. It is of course harder to have a believable/likeable talking MC that doesn't annoy you. Or character that contradicts their actions. Which happens too often as well. Two of such come to my mind. Niko from GTA IV and Kaim from LO.
Tired soldier that Niko is portraying with his comments dont reflect his actions. Of course the nature of GTA is crazy action blasting and you cant really play the game peacefully. Main character Kaim in Lost Odyssey is portrayed as a deep and experienced immortal through the dreams (which are awesome) but when he speaks he doesnt show any of these emotions. Seems like it is completely different person. OK I know he lost his memory and was hesistant to remember the things he had done. But everything? And can not show any sign of compassion against his own wife?

God I fucking love Chrono Trigger, if only Crono actually fucking said something once in a while

The main character DOES speak...

...Only when he levels up... (look at the speech bubble that appears when he levels up)

for me, sometimes the silent hero works and sometimes it doesn't

In games like TLOZ the silent thing works fine.

but i felt like the hero doesn't even exist in Glory of Heracles, the other characters barely interact with him! once they do though, they only ask for a yes or no answer... sure the other characters talk about him but they rarely talk to the hero

On most platformers or shooters I don't notice much, but on RPGs I can't stand the quite hero. Lets compare Sands of Destuction and Glory of Heracles. In Destruct the hero goes super awesome crimson super sayian and yells "I'II protect the ones I love" to give the story that epic feel, but all Heracles says is varied "yes", "no", "power up!"

once years and years ago, I was at an anime con (the only one I'd ever been to...and I was more there because it was also a godzilla con. Okay, you in the back stop snickering! ) and a friend was cosplaying as Chrono. He and his friends put on a skit where they were having all these conversations. Whenever my friend would contribute, he'd hold up a sign either showing Chrono's head nodding in approval, or shaking no.

It got plenty of laughs at the time.

Also, I could be mistaken, but Chrono Cross appears to poke fun at the convention, in that the main character doesn't talk, but he switches bodies with the villain half way through--after which, when you run into him, he's VERY verbose.

Well, it's a pretty bad game anyways.

A non talking main hero doesn't have to be a problem, but it does take a dimension out of the game.
As much fun as it is to play your own hero, making them an empty mute shell is kind of pointless. It only damages the story.
