So I recently got a action replay GBX cartridge. I have no idea how to use it.

This is what it looks like. I tried to put it in my gameboy advanced SP. Nothing happened. I also tried it in a DS lite. This time it loaded but the Nintendo logo was corrupted like when you load a game but you haven't blown on it or whatever. I don't have my gameboy advanced on me at the moment. So what am i doing wrong? I also tried to connect to the computer but that a whole another story. I got a virtual machine to run a a 32bit operating system. Plugged it in with a cable i had knocking around. Then downloaded the companion software from codejunkies which i assume is the correct one. When i try to find it it says error connecting. but i assume that because i don't have it plugged into anything. So has anyone got any idea?

First off make sure you clean the AR cartridge and any games you'll be using. Make sure you use a q tip with some rubbing alcohol (I use 70%). Even if you don't think you have to, it's best to be 100% certain that everything's clean because the AR can be kind of fickle especially if the cartridges are dirty.

With that said you'll need a game boy game inserted into the action replay to actually use it. If you don't have a game inserted the AR won't boot no matter what you do. You should also be able to use that PC program just fine on any modern day computer. I don't have a GB AR but I do own the GBA AR and the software worked just fine with Windows 7 64bit. If it doesn't work, or won't install, try running the software as admin and set the compatibility to Windows XP SP3.

It wont work with a windows 7 64 bit OS due to the drivers needed for the cartridge only been compiled in a 32 bit format. Due to being created when 64 bit wasn't consumer level. So will this only work with standard gameboy colour and gameboy games not advanced?

My bad I just checked and yeah GBX plays GBA games. I have this AR http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51PB2ACKE3L.jpg so I got confused.

I checked out the drivers to see if there was anyway you could use alternative ones (like the other AR GBA drivers) but I couldn't find anything else that was compatible.

Yeah you'll need a GBA game (or screw it, try GBC, won't kill the AR) to boot the device. I'm not sure if a VM will allow you to connect though. Sorry I couldn't be any more help but the last time I used this software was years ago.

It doesn't seem to want to work with my gameboy advanced SP. When I get back to my gameboy I will try it on that.Is it not designed for the SP or something?

I don't see why it wouldn't work for it? I know for a fact the GBC Gameshark works with the SP so I don't see why the AR wouldn't. My only guess is that it's broke, it's realllllly dirty, or the games won't work for some reason or another. I don't think the switch matters if it's in different positions or not as it should just boot on up. I also tried looking up rather or not the device was region free and I assume it is but I couldn't find anything about it. Your model was the first released followed by mine, the MAX, and finally MAX DUO.

I don't even see how you could break the AR unless it somehow corrupted during an update (updating the software with cheats, or new firmware, if available). It should boot up like any other game without issue but if it's not booting up at all even with a game inserted then IDK, it could be broke somehow.

I just got back to my game boy advanced and it works with it. But when it loads up it I can select the country and the background is all corrupt but doesn't doesn't loads from there, just a blank screen. Thanks for all your help so far. You got any idea of what to do?

@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!

@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

never had that i don't think

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
