As a site GBAtemp has been around for more than 20 years. Starting as a place to share the latest GBA ROMs and later evolving into the forums we know today, we’re a site that lives and dies by its community, and it’s the larger community I’m hoping to reach out to today.

What I’m wanting from this is to see the general thoughts and feelings of the folks that log into the site daily, especially when it comes to reviews, news, and editorial content. The aim of this is to use the feedback we get to better focus our content and hopefully write things people enjoy both reading and engaging with, as well as covering more topics people are genuinely interested in. I'm really wanting this to be an ongoing effort to have the front page better reflect the unique nature of the site, and that starts with this. If you've got any thoughts, you can either reply to this topic, or if you're happy to provide some more guided feedback, @shaunj66 has put together a short feedback form that you can find below. Anybody filling this out will receive 100 XP on the site for their participation, so please do check this out.

I will take a moment to clear the air on a few topics I’ve seen come up over time on the forum, if only to save people asking and speculating going forwards. As an editorial team we aren’t compensated for our contributions to the site, be it posting news, bespoke editorial content, or reviews. While we are usually able to keep the things we’ve reviewed, we aren’t paid anything from those providing the items or game codes, nor are we incentivised to score things highly. Each reviewer tackles a game or hardware review as they see fit, with the score being their own decision. The only time I’m aware of where this hasn’t been the case was with our Tears of the Kingdom review, which Costello summarised here for those curious about that.

In terms of revenue streams for the site, GBAtemp is funded by a mixture of account upgrades and advertisements (these provided via Playwire). Sponsored posts have been run in the past, but where they were posted they were clearly marked as such. As things stand today we don’t run sponsored content, nor to we use affiliate links with items we review or cover more generally.

I also want to thank everybody above who supports the site monetarily, but also those that just keep coming back and contributing. Whether you financially support the site or not, you are an important part of what keeps things running, and I do want to acknowledge that.

That's not quite how surveys like this work. When people are asked to rank a set of features based on priority, really helpful trends can appear about how to divert resources in the future. Does the site want to push a feature that isn't important to people? They may want to re adjust their approach or diminish their efforts to push it. Is something taking a higher priority than planned? They may want to use that information to lean further into that, or let it coast while bolstering other efforts. For example, I have never used the downloads feature on this site, but if GBAtemp wants to become a distribution hub for fan content, they may want to find ways to encourage people to prioritize that feature.

I love this site and visit her daily. But I have one "issue". Not a big deal, but it bothers me as hell. And it just happens on PC. There is an annoying popup window. And really every time I have to close it (I screenshot it later because I write this with my phone).

Just wanted to throw my opinion in here, just to add to the status quo.

This website has been amazing for keeping up with trends and managing to stay alive for all these years. Not only that, but maintaining a thriving community. That's very difficult on a forum these days, unless you have an expansively (and expensively) forum that has a shitload of members and you keep it extremely vague, to the point where you almost lose your identity. Kudos to the admins, founders and moderators for your efforts and everything you do. Many of us respect you, and even those who may not necessary LIKE the moderation team, have to still recognize the effort and time you all put in. I only lurked the website back then, and got involved with the forums many years later when I got more seriously into homebrew, but I still appreciate what you've all accomplished. I was a significant part of a different website and forum that, unlike here, has dwindled in activity severely, despite attempting to keep alive, so I know how difficult it is. Way to go, all!


I will admit I've posted some ridiculous things when it comes to the reviews of products on the front page that has barely anything to do with the intent and purpose of this website. I was going to include some criticism on that, but I think myself and several others have to realize that we need to learn to ignore those posts instead of trash on them, as I'm realizing that they are necessary for income to keep this website going.


I would also like to echo 1000% the bane of my existence on not only this website, but any social media out there - the DMCA posts every time a ROM hack or fangame or awesome project is posted. So many of us would like to appreciate and discuss these items, but positive, proper, actual discussion gets pushed down and demotivated to interact by so many of these postings.


"in b4 DMCA" and "ha ha Nintendo is taking this down immediately" and "I wager a week before the ban hammer comes flying" and "they should have done this when they knew x company would come after them" is just so god damn fucking annoying. I get it, every one does. Said website I was a part of was a Mario fangame forum that has existed since 2000, and there was not even a single HINT of Nintendo shutting down the website or any of the games in over 24 years. Can we possibly set up a poll down the road to see the general consensus of allowing these types of posts to continue?


And just to make this a sandwich, thank you again, team and members, for making this an awesome experience. I'm sure the website has had its times and trails and tribulations, it's set of the loveliest of people and nastiest of people come and go and stay, but it builds character. It's what helps build a community. I don't think there's any other way to strengthen, and this site has pulled through. Another 20 years? Let's do it.
