This is a patch for Ocarina of Time 3D. It works with the European version of the game.

The patch has two major additions.
  • Increase the render and presentation resolution.
    • On the Old 2DS, rendering is performed at 800x480 and supersampled to 400x240.
    • On other consoles in 2D, rendering is performed at 800x480 and supersampled to 800x240.
    • On other consoles in 3D, rendering is performed at 400x480 per eye and supersampled to 400x240 per eye.
  • Map several touch screen actions to buttons.
    • Up - First person/Navi
    • Left - Item I
    • Right - Item II
    • Down - Ocarina
    • Select - Open items menu
Here is a comparison of scenes from the game captured using Luma's screenshot function.

I have done some basic playtesting, but haven't yet beaten the game end to end. Therefore this patch can be considered an alpha. Feedback is highly welcome. This patch was developed with AI assistance.

Copy the contents of the attached .zip to your 3DS SD card and ensure Luma has game patching enabled.

Enjoy!

  • Increase the render resolution in 2D mode from 400x480 to 800x480 for improved graphical quality.
    • On the Old 2DS this is downscaled to 400x240 for display. On other consoles this is downscaled to 800x240 for display.
    • 3D mode is unaffected.
  • Map several touch screen actions to buttons.
    • Up - First person/Navi
    • Left - Item I
    • Right - Item II
    • Down - Ocarina
    • Select - Open items menu

Is high quality exclusive to the New 3DS?

Wow, this is incredible! I always dreamed of pushing the 3DS's resolution and rendering capabilities to the absolute limit in commercial games. How long did it take you to make this? Which AI did you use? It seems completely crazy to me that this news isn't blowing up right now. I would love to see this implemented in many more games!

I have largely working patches for Ridge Racer 3D and SMT IV right now too, but they need a little more polish before I can publish them. Here's a teaser.

I was inspired by the Super Mario 64 port which enables 800x240 display mode - no official games use this mode, but it's way sharper than the native 400x240. OoT 3D and SMT IV natively enable vertical 480 -> 240 supersampling in 2D mode, which also improves quality but is a little wasteful. With a little trickery, we can have both supersampling and 800-wide, add supersampling to 3D mode, and improve supersampling on the 2DS.

Thanks for the reply! I used to wonder if the 800p mode could ever be activated in commercial 3DS games, but my own research turned up nothing to even get started. Seeing non-commercial games running at 800p and the NDS widescreen mods is exactly what led me to believe it was possible. I actually thought Capcom games used this 800p mode to look so good, but they use a different method. Thank you for sharing your progress!
Personally, I would love to see Metal Gear Solid 3D with this mode. I also think seeing it in any of the Capcom games would be absolutely insane, considering they already look spectacular with the method they use for their graphics engine. I would even pay to have more patches like this. Thank you, after 15 years since its release, seeing this on a 3DS is fascinating.

I'll add some of these games to my list of planned patches. There's a fair amount of troubleshooting and debugging required and the skills docs are quite messy atm.

I will definitely be keeping an eye on your progress, you are making a dream come true for a huge 3DS fan. I will look into ways to give this news more visibility, hoping that more people see what is possible and feel inspired to create their own patches. Thank you so much once again!

Hey, thanks for the High Res & Controls patch, it's awesome work!

I wanted to use it together with the "Single Screen Experience" mod (gamebanana.com/mods/695893), but I ran into a conflict. Both patches rewrite the exact same function at offset 0x3C99A8 in code.bin - yours replaces the whole 936-byte function, and Single Screen replaces the first 192 bytes of it with different code.

Is there any chance you'd consider adding compatibility with this mod, or could you point me to which part of that function handles what, so I could try merging them myself? Really appreciate any guidance, and thanks again for the great patch!

This offset contains empty padding. Both our patches reuse this location for different hooks. I'll release sources soon which will help make porting it to other mods easier.
