Hacking GBA Save Backup

Is it possible to backup saves from a retail GBA cartridge using an EZV 3-in-1 or R4? Had a quick look around, but could only find things for standalone slot2 carts.

I think the only possible way is to use an action replay or gameshark. I used to use the gameshark method on the original GBA. Not sure if either will work on DS hardware though as they used the port on the top of the old GBA for connection.

Sendsav coupled with the FCSR DLDI might work (although it would be terribly convoluted) and EEPINATOR ( http://blog.davr.org/2007/03/31/eepinator/ ) can do SRAM saves.
