You leave "kacho" as is when Arino's Title is referenced, so why not leave all instances of "課長" in the Game Training Tool as "kacho"? Like, instead of "Deputy Manager Class", it would be "Deputy Kacho Class". I think it would be kind of fun.

Okay, I'll parenthesize those two titles too in my previous post. That sounds like a fun idea, actually. No sense in making every title a dry corporate copy/paste of real-world titles when this is a *game* after all, and Arino is known as "The Kacho" even in the West.

Oh! Also! Some other things that I thought could be kind of fun:
  1. When Arino gets on the high score list of a game, he always enters either "SEX", "SET", or (if the game allows for 4 letters) "SEXY" as his name. Maybe if there's a high score list some of the high score names could be set to one of these...? I know it's inappropriate, but that's what Arino did in the show...
  2. In the show, there were assistant directors that often came on. They were known as ADs. Maybe that could be incorporated into the ranking in the Game Training Tool somehow...?
  3. The Kotaku translation refers to Arino as "Acting Chief" rather than "Deputy Kacho" or "Deputy Manager". In fact, a lot of the fansubs I can find refer to this title as "Acting Manager" or "Acting Chief"... Dunno what to make of this. Just thought I should mention it...?

ADs...aha! That explains something else. In the RPG one of the better pieces of armor is the "AD Suit"...hmm...

About Acting vs Deputy Manager/Chief, Acting is fine, though at places I've worked (Hitachi, KDDI, Hachette Fujingaho), "Kacho" was "Section Chief". It kind of loses any magic of might have when you put it like that. If you want to stick to the established titles as per Kotaku or TV fan translations, I'm impartial as long as it is consistent. I'm kind of humming and hawing here about the high score titles, though. What were they in the original Japanese games? (RGC1 or 2 wherever it may be)

Okay, when I'm home later today I hope to have more to report.

As for the game buttons, sigh, I wish there was a better way to do it, the font is different from the rest of the buttons, it just looks weird I think (As do the Resume and Off buttons, both use different fonts).
But I don't think it is possible, the buttons are just too small, not even Pixel fonts work, I tried. Oh well, I guess you can't have everything.

I think the second one is the best, especially when viewed on the DS screen, I think...

Nice work! I def think the second version fits better, as it fills out a good amount of the black space at the top of the screen. It also appears visually closer to the original Japanese design. I'd be concerned that the 1st edit would be a little too small for the screen, plus it doesn't come over with the same "title header" impact as with the 2nd design.

The first is still cool, but when seeing them side by side, #2 is easily #1 for me. ;)

If it's possible technically without too much hassle on rearranging the OAM table (or if it's just prerendered as a whole like that), the second is the better version, since the first one will lose the subtlety of its excellent design and become a pixellated mess whenever it's zoomed in.

Option one looks more like GCCX style, so I vote that one.

If you watch 1 minute 17 seconds into the "Quiz Feudal Lords Ambition" episode, it talks about the three different titles that Arino has held during the show.


Another point of clarification. The AD's on the show are usually intern type workers, and they're usually the ones that help Arino with the games if he gets stuck, or end up beating the games that he can't.

Okay, just a quick post before bed.

I've handed some of the graphics to Mars_x (specifically, the Settings screen and the support bar for the action sequences in the Adventure game) and I think after the Training Tool, SubnetPie said he was going to take a crack at the Adventure Game Titles.

I managed to fix up the Japanese menu issue with the 2nd Adventure game. It was using a different tileset because there are no "Challenges" for this game unlike the others.

I'm also trying to figure out the Triotos taunts. Remember these are all graphics, not text as-is. It is just a matter of putting in all the tiles in English. Very, very tedious, but this shouldn't be bad unless working with a 256 color image behaves differently than a simple 16 color one (for the OAM it shouldn't matter but I seem to have all the "luck" sometimes with random oddities)

Because I love working with big blocks of BLERGH! (I need to add the roman alphabet in upper and lower case to this and then remap every character in each taunt or message to make up the English phrase).

For the curious, I typed out all of the taunts and phrases spouted to you by the VS rivals. I need to sit down and think about how to put this in English using the minimum amount of characters. I can add/delete objects/letters as I wish, but in general working with very large numbers of objects at once is a pain.

And speaking of Triotos DX, I figured out which title image to change. This:

But it all has to come together somehow. I guess I need a B&W logo for the DX game instead of a color one in the style of that first image.

Edit> I just realized I needed the Records Screen done up, too:

I did the strings a while ago but I noticed it also has "Records" in the top left and the game title in the top right..."High Scores" on the blue tab and in the bottom bar, (B) goes "Back". The Game titles can be copy/pasted from the game selection screen though, I think.

I can provide a high quality scan if you want to use it.

I think it looks really nice, but I think we should get all angles covered before making a final choice on that.

Maybe a mockup could be made of a Retro Game Challenge logo in a style identical to the GameCenter CX logo. While the horizontal Retro Game Challenge logo from before was close, it didn't have a parallelogram border and there was an underline coming from the R in "Retro".

This would be just to make sure that a Retro Game Challenge logo rather than a GameCenter CX logo would be better, of course...

I'm only using official logos, even the translated ones
(The horizontal version of RGC logo is found in the box of the original game).

Having said that, I could make any version needed, as long as we reach a consensus.
I like it with the Game Center CX, since it does refer to the company instead of the game.
