I found in a box of old stuff my R4 Revolution for DS.

I have a few questions:

Will this work on my 3DS running 4.1 firmware?

If not, what card should I buy that will allow me to play my DS backups?

----

Additional question, are my 3DS backups able to be played somehow?

No, you can't use an original R4 on anything but a DS or DS lite.
I'd reccommend getting either an Acekard2i or a Supercard DSTWO, depending on if you just want the basics, or real time save, in-game menus, etc.
There is no flashcart that can play 3DS backups currently.

So the Supercard DSTWO is my best bet? I was also reading about the R4I Gold, but I don't know if that will work either.

What's the difference between the Acekard2i and the Supercard? Are they pretty easy to use like my R4 was? I'm very new to all of this on my 3DS

The DSTWO is the most expensive, but the best option. It has the fastest updates if Nintendo blocks the card via firmware updates, can be updated even if it will not boot, and has extras like GBA emulation and other unique homebrew. If you're on a budget then the R4i Gold I've heard works well, however I don't own one so I'm not too sure.

If you will be buying a r4i gold make sure you get one that says on the website label "r4ids.cn" this cart if fully supported by wood r4 (wood r4 is a very good kernel). Acekard 2i is also good. but it has some contact issues. and dstwo is the best.

The DSTWO has excellent support and a GBA and Snes emulator if you're looking to play those games too, it is the most costly one but well worth it.

The R4i Gold, this one: http://www.r4ids.cn/ would be my second choice due to the Wood firmware and is well supported.

Just to help you out even further:

AceKard2i:
  • Loads DS Roms in DS mode (no DSi mode for DSi enhanced games)
  • Loads most DS homebrew flawlessly
  • Can load .txt files by default
  • Receives frequent updates when the 3DS/DSi blocks it (but not instantly)
  • Cheats
SuperCardDSTWO:
  • All of Acekard's capabilities + updates arrive earlier
  • Supports real-time save, a real-time menu, etc
  • Has its own ram implemented in the cart
  • GBA emulator (AK2i cannot do this acceptably)
That's about all I can think of. Obviously the DS TWO is more expensive, but better. I only had an original R4 before, and an AK2i, and they both did the job for me on my DSL and DSi XL.
If the extra ram and real-time menus and saving matter to you, go for it!

Ak2i, r4i gold 3ds(r4ids.cn) and dstwo are all OK. Ak2i is slower than the other two when coming to releasing the updating patch. As you know, ak2i does not support 3ds 4.3.0-10 till now and the other two released the updating patch just within several hours. Therefore, I recommend you r4i gold 3ds(r4ids.cn) if you care about price and the speed of releasing updating patch.
