Okay, so some of you might remember way back when I had first tried to repair my Wii by replacing its DVD-ROM drive, only to get one from a newer Wii model, thus wouldn't accept any Nintendo GameCube games.
I can at least now say that I have since been able to get a replacement drive, that thankfully is compatible, and if I dare say, seems to actually load retail gamecube games faster than I recall my original drive doing so. Strange, but I'm not complaining.
In any case, I know mine is soft-modded, but it really has been a while since I've done anything with it. IIRC, I'm still running cfg-USB loader as my primary Wii games loader on it. I know I dabbled with DIOS MIOS since I loved the idea of finally also being able to start putting this GameCube collection onto the USB hard drive I gave the system to employ, and thus helping minimize wear and tear on the fresh disc drive.
So, here's the skinny... Obviously, I probably need to update the IOS stuff for soft-modding, and probably should be looking at a different loader, if cfg-USB isn't being actively supported anymore. Though there is always the if it ain't broke, don't fix it mantra. Though, here are some constraints before people start going crazy with recommends.

- this is the biggie. At no point should these mods actually have me at less than what a standard Wii can support. This is not so much for myself, but for my fiancee, who typically abhors the idea of modded consoles and won't let me soft-mod hers. Simply, if for example, she is using my Wii system, and can't pop in a game and load it like she would in her unmodified Wii, that just causes headaches I can do without. So in order for me to keep mine in the living room and on the better TV, I gotta keep it where it will still work with retail Wii and GameCube games like an untouched Wii console. Clear?
- Even when I last was able to actively mess with this stuff, I keep recalling hearing about SNEEK/UNEEK, but never touched it for the simple reason that I never knew what the *expletive* any of it was, or which would be better for me. Would either be worthwhile if I seem to still be doing okay with the standard setup as is? Is either better over another, if I somehow ever end up in a position where I have a WiiU and can then migrate my legit games and WiiWare over to it?
- Assuming I still have storage space left after migrating all the available games that we already do have onto the hard drive (both GC and Wii), the thought has certainly crossed my mind to also see about putting some of the retro emulators onto the Wii to play the older games on it like I already do with my PSP. Any recommends for that?
