Okay, so some of you might remember way back when I had first tried to repair my Wii by replacing its DVD-ROM drive, only to get one from a newer Wii model, thus wouldn't accept any Nintendo GameCube games.

I can at least now say that I have since been able to get a replacement drive, that thankfully is compatible, and if I dare say, seems to actually load retail gamecube games faster than I recall my original drive doing so. Strange, but I'm not complaining.

In any case, I know mine is soft-modded, but it really has been a while since I've done anything with it. IIRC, I'm still running cfg-USB loader as my primary Wii games loader on it. I know I dabbled with DIOS MIOS since I loved the idea of finally also being able to start putting this GameCube collection onto the USB hard drive I gave the system to employ, and thus helping minimize wear and tear on the fresh disc drive.

So, here's the skinny... Obviously, I probably need to update the IOS stuff for soft-modding, and probably should be looking at a different loader, if cfg-USB isn't being actively supported anymore. Though there is always the if it ain't broke, don't fix it mantra. Though, here are some constraints before people start going crazy with recommends. :teach:
  • this is the biggie. At no point should these mods actually have me at less than what a standard Wii can support. This is not so much for myself, but for my fiancee, who typically abhors the idea of modded consoles and won't let me soft-mod hers. Simply, if for example, she is using my Wii system, and can't pop in a game and load it like she would in her unmodified Wii, that just causes headaches I can do without. So in order for me to keep mine in the living room and on the better TV, I gotta keep it where it will still work with retail Wii and GameCube games like an untouched Wii console. Clear? :yaywii:
  • Even when I last was able to actively mess with this stuff, I keep recalling hearing about SNEEK/UNEEK, but never touched it for the simple reason that I never knew what the *expletive* any of it was, or which would be better for me. Would either be worthwhile if I seem to still be doing okay with the standard setup as is? Is either better over another, if I somehow ever end up in a position where I have a WiiU and can then migrate my legit games and WiiWare over to it?
  • Assuming I still have storage space left after migrating all the available games that we already do have onto the hard drive (both GC and Wii), the thought has certainly crossed my mind to also see about putting some of the retro emulators onto the Wii to play the older games on it like I already do with my PSP. :gba: Any recommends for that?
Nothing like getting a new lease on hardware after repairing it. Am I right?

I'm no expert but here is what I would recommend for you.

First, updating your IOSes.

Go to this post here and run a syscheck on your Wii. You don't need to post it but do copy the file to your computer.

Next go to this site here and download and install ModMii. I personally prefer the non skinned version. In ModMii you should see an option to scan your syscheck. Basically drag and drop the syscheck file you copied to your computer into ModMii and it will tell you what needs to be updated as well as download everything needed for you and even generate a guide for you to follow. Once you do everything it tells you your IOSes should be up to date.

Second, I use USB Loader GX and love it. I've never used any of the other ones so I really have no option there. But I load all my Wii and GameCube games with that

So far everything I've talked about would have no affect on you Wii disc game loading so your wife should have no complaints there.

Third, you're GameCube games. If you installed DIOS MIOS you may have issues playing actual GameCube discs. I don't really know because I haven't used it in so long. So if you have installed it you may need to reinstall the official GameCube MIOS which is believe is called MIOS v10. Don't quote me on that though. I'm sure you can find in the forums how to rei stall that. Then use Nintendont to play your GameCube games through your loader like USB Loader GX.

So right now with the setup I described you should be able to play your Wii and GameCube backups from a USB drive as well as load up your Wii and GameCube discs as you always would.

As far as NEEK, I really don't think you need it from what you were asking. Unless you want to play those troublesome WiiWare or Virtual Console games that only work through NEEK. But if you do ModMii has an option that will download everything you need and will walk you through how to use it.

I hope this helps. Please feel free to ask for more help if you need it. I'd be more than happy to help.

Well, I haven't had much time to look into it myself with great detail, but I can at least attest that dIOS mIOS doesn't affect the ability to play retail gamecube games from my own testing.

Ok. But I believe you are playing your regular gamecube games through Dios MIOS as well that way. So if you ever run into problems with an actual disc that could be why.

Wait, what is the story regarding DIOS MIOS though? Why would it have a problem with loading standard gamecube discs? I thought that it was designed for that (and more, obviously) ?

Meanwhile, in other topics it seems like everyone and their dog is going out of their way to recommend Nintendont as a replacement, but I thought Nintendont had a bunch of (needless) anti-piracy checks? Or was that Devolution? Sorry if I sound confused, but it really has been a long time since I last had the time to sit down and go over all of this.

The original MIOS will play GameCube discs just like it always has. DIOS MIOS replaced the original with a modified one that allowed you to play GameCube from USB but broke the ability to play GameCube discs. I haven't used DIOS MIOS in a very long time but I see they have updated it so you can once again use actual discs. So if everything is working fine for you then great.

Nintendont however is an app on your SD card and doesn't need to replace the original MIOS. So your wife would be happy in the sense that all GameCube games would run exactly like they always would from disc since everything is original. Not saying they wouldn't with DIOS MIOS but I don't personally know. At least by having the original MIOS installed to remove that possible variable.

Devolution is also installed on your SD card and it is the one with the Anti-Piracy checks. Nintendont had come a long way and can do just about everything Devolution can without the disc verifications. The only thing Devolution has over Nintendont is that Devolution can emulate the GameCube modem. That means you can play Phantasy Star Online online again. You can also play games that can connect to other GameCubes/Wiis that are connected via LAN like Mario Kart Double Dash.

If I we're you, I would put both on your SD card, verify as many games as you can through Devolution and then use USB Loader GX to pick which games you want to run with Nintendont and which ones you want to use with Devolution. Me personally I use Nintendont for all my games but I'm starting to mess with Devolution again because I want to try out the modem support.

I hope that answers your questions. If you would like, I could try and help walk you through what you need to do to have your Wii set up exactly like mine. I've spent a long time tweaking my Wii and can finally say I now have the "perfect" set up for my needs.

Sorry it took me so long... finally have Holiday break, so I was able to make time to get this taken care of.

According to Modmii 6.3.6, all I needed to update was HackMii and BootMii files. Though that might be a little awkward, because I had set aside a separate SD explicitly to store the NAND backup of this Wii and boot up modmii. Would it make more sense to put those files on that?

Next, I noticed my Wii is still on 4.2U... isn't 4.3U needed if ever I get myself a WiiU and thus to be able to migrate my purchased content? That said, one theory I did have was...
- Make a nand backup before running the migration stuff
- run the migrater thing for transferring my purchased items to the WiiU
- restore the nand backup to retain my content on the regular wii, in addition to the WiiU.

Would that work? Would be nice to know, if ever I end up in the position to have one later.

That said, even with the current build of DML cMIOS it has, I haven't had any problems loading any of our existing GameCube games. If anything, with the replacement drive (which seems to be a D2C as opposed to the D2B it originally shipped with), the games are detected and load a little faster now. Much appreciated, I can tell you. :yaywii:

I would go with the old saying of if it ain't broke then don't fix it. The important part is that modmii didn't tell you that you needed to update any of your IOSes. So I wouldn't worry about the HackMii or BootMii files.

As far as transferring your Wii to a WiiU, you would have to get help from someone else. Your logic makes sense but I personally haven't done that and can't comment on if it will work.

So what else are you trying to do and what have you done so far?

Primarily, just making sure everything else about the standard Wii already works as it should. Having its dvd drive out like that made it hard to go use it, even when I had most of my physical collection mirrored on it.

Though, now that reminds me... way back, wen it was still not yet up on the eshop officially, I had used a hacked build of Smash 64 to install as a VC title. Since then, I had been able to earn it legitimately as a reward from Nintendo. However, since then when I uninstalled the hacked build, and download to install the legit build, it fails to install. Every time. And unfortunately, that was at least a couple of (re)formats ago, so I don't have the original .wad I used, and it's not like the standard/legit download way from nintendo allows me to at least keep the .wad file they provide to at least figure out why it's not wanting to install/run.

What would be the best thing to do for that?
