brink said:FF9 was a rehash of previous FF games, almost every plot element or character had been done before (rebellious princess, "good" empire gone bad, crazy scientific experimental baddie bent on world destruction, etc etc). The gameplay was pretty much a clone of FF6 with some innovation, but not nearly enough.
Which was Sakaguchi's intention, but basically there was nothing original at all about ff9. It's still a good game in many ways, but I think FF10 was a better game because they showed some daring to do new things again. Not that new things is a good thing always, FF8 can show that. You can't hold FF above other genres, if companies essentially release the same game again they will get slammed for it, Square is not an exception.

The Sphere Grid was daunting in FFX - also the difficulty was way too high unless you spent months levelling up.

I beat the game with minimal grind. Using the monsters in Zanarkand (sp?) I got to the end of the sphere grids for the main characters I was using and beat Yunalesca, then did most of the sidequests (minus ultimate weapons, I've always seen them as a waste of time) then went on to beat Sin.

here's a good one tho
