I mean, he was the one to make The Room more well known on the Internet, so it's not like it was all bad.
The fact is that the "angry nostalgic for 80's/90's nerd" trend is something that died for sure by 2012. Yeah, James Rolfe is still making AVGN videos, but that's because he got himself into a corner professionally by making a movie about a guy who reviews games on a game that, while "bad," didn't deserve the movie treatment, or at least the way it ended up playing out. And while there still was some good stuff like Big Rigs, HK97 and some of the other games he's reviewed lately, James Rolfe, in general, should just focus on saving up all his money, and consider retiring the AVGN character. He said the whole thing started out as a joke, and now, it's become the only thing sustaining him and his life atm. Like being forced to be a clown online, and isn't enjoying his job anymore.
I used to want to start a YT channel like James Rolfe did...until I realized how much money and investment I'd need, even assuming I could be successful in the first place. And that's not even going into nightmares like WingsOfRedemption.
