I mean, the servers are still there, and also some services hasn't been discontinued. Which ones, you may ask? One: the Today and Tomorrow Channel. It still works with no homebrew.

At this point, I'd rather Nintendo just sell ROMs, unencapsulated and unencrypted.

Basically do what Sega does with the MD/Gen games in Steam.

I've never been fond of the Shop Channel anyway because of Nintendo's handling of DRM on the Wii combined with the archaic points system.

Not really.

Although this will never happen, it would be great if Nintendo could combine all of its online services into one platform. They probably have the necessary funds for it. Although maintenance and upkeep could be a problem. Let's take a trip to Fantasy Land for a moment. Just think about having all eShops on a single platform connected to your account. If you buy a DS game on the Switch, it will automatically be sent to your DS. The same thing with other systems. Additionally, this could open doors for new games on these systems.

who... really cares at this point?
anything that you want can be downloaded onto a usb drive and run via cfg or usb loader gx
its a waste of server space and money to keep the server up.

Yea but they are still online the servers, there's just less traffic...

I mean, today I would buy games via the Wii! But now, it's just all about homebrew. Nintendo should keep it's legacy... but it's trying to hide it.
☹️

Having a server up for virtually no traffic and virtually no space isn't a concern. Exaggerating a bit: A Raspberry Pi could do the job.

Providing the possibility to still buy things leads to problems. You have to provide support if adding funds or buying or download doesn't work. People will phone and ask for help because their Wii does not connect to the new router with deactivated legacy WiFi.

With the majority of people always jumping the bandwagon for new, new, new, you won't have enough sales to justify the efforts. From business/economics point of view it is a logical step to discontinue services. That said I'm totally against discontinuation myself. I would be all in for companies to be obliged to provide minimal access to legacy stuff. They payment processing might be tricky, so shutting down that might be justified at some point.

But take the 3DS/Wii U online services for example. It's not that this requires a whole compute center and Nintendo made billions with the systems. Why do they pull the plug for the few people not jumping the "NEW!" bandwagon? Why aren't they allowed to continue online gaming?

I don't think it makes any sense at this point. It's been a long time since it was taken down, people have moved on from the Wii, etc, it would be too little, too late.

If you search youtube, someone's made a website that recreates the wii shop experience somewhat. It's all right from I saw. You click the thing, it initiates a "download" then you get wad file of the game for you to use. It's neat enough I suppose, although I also saw that they were trying to recreate the wii shop on the actual console as well. From what I remember they succeeded somewhat, at the very least with the free channels. It would probably be very illegal to operate a wii shop recreation on the actual console that gives you real games for free. Or at the very least it would be in Nintendo's eyes.

What if your router is set to 5Ghz only? What if it is set to WPA3? What if it is set to WiFi ac? What if the Wii doesn't like your router?

If 1% of the people run into trouble connecting you'll get *A LOT* of support requests. For devices considered by the manufacturer it makes no economic sense to provide any support. This is the reply manufacturers 😍 love 😍
people have moved on from the Wii,
🤑 "Just move on!" That's the spirit of out time! Wanna buy a (soon obsolete) Switch? 🤑

Sometimes I get the feeling Nintendo is afraid of their own legacy. (S)NES and GB(C)/GBA games can keep one busy for the rest of the natural life and can't be sold for $80 a piece anymore. Virtual Console as a legal method of obtaining (a small fraction) of the old libraries could in theory harm sales of full price titles. So gate that stuff behind eternal rent paying instead of selling permanent licenses.

Some day they should just release dedicated Virtual Console hardware. Like the NES/SNES Classic, but supporting more consoles and with its own storefront. It would be something that won't easily become obsolete or outdated (after all new official games are not being released for these old consoles, so as long as the hardware is capable of emulating up to N64 well, it should not become obsolete), hence no reason to ever shut down the storefront for it.
Much preferrable over having to re-buy the same ROMs on every new console released. And since Nintendo no longer offers Virtual Console, the only official option these days if you want games that are not available on the NES/SNES Classic or NSO.

that's because it's just bundled in, just like internet channel and photo channel. these three do not interact with WC24 or RC24.

I went today and looked at a motorcycle someone was selling. I get there and the battery on it was dead, so the guy grabbed a battery charger and hooked it up. He plugged it into the wall, and the motorcycle sparked and started smoking. Come to find out the bike uses a 6 volt battery and the guy had the charger set to 12v. I said sorry to the dude and walked away. I felt bad for him tho.
