[Release] Cave Story 3ds-ware Aeon Genesis Translation

    Ever since seeing some of the cool hacks that people have done using Hans, I decided to figure out if it was possible to recreate the Aeon Genesis fan translation of Cave Story in the 3ds-ware version. Surprisingly, all that was required was to open up the scripts of the original translated version of Cave Story and simply replacing the scripts that the 3ds version used, as besides the actual words, the scripts are the same. I worked for a few hours manually replacing each script, and we can finally have the good old fashioned fan translation on the 3ds.

    Version 0.9 released. Fixes include:
    • Changed the map name of Bushlands to Grasstown the correct way.
    • Updated some doors to send you to the correct place, notably near the starting area.
    • You no longer die at the start of a new file after the intro cutscene.

    Very cool, I'll give this a shot next time I want to play Cave Story. I'm used to the original translation from playing it on the PSP way back in the day

    Version 0.91 released. Fixes include:
    • A tyop
    • Fixed a bug in the official release that placed you in the wrong position after receiving the polar star, it now places you in the correct position.

    A question from someone who's playing Cave Story for the first time: What's the difference between this fan translation and the official one?

    It's just the original way most fans played the game in English, and it has quite a few differences from the official Nicalis version. It's not essential to enjoying the game though.

    • A better easter egg. (Check the monitor room in the egg coridor!)
    • The remaining tyops.
    • A rare bug in the starting area.

    Final Final Version 1.1 Released. Fixes Include:
    • Fixed regression in Quote's position in the opening cutscene.
    • All Challenges are enabled at first bootup, no need to unlock them.

    No source code = can't port.
    Unless someone went and re-created it from scratch which would be impressive.

    The script that the eshop uses is actually the same as the script the freeware version uses, so I just ported the scripts from that, with some slight adjustments for changes in the maps between the two versions. As for porting other mods, I've tried to port the machine gun challenge, but I couldn't get the map to work properly. I haven't tried fan mods though. I actually planned to try and port the translation to the 3ds version as well, but I couldn't get that fully working due to some differences.

    @1ted59 will this work w/ the built in LayedFS in the new luma update?

    I updated the download to be compatible with LayeredFS. Now to use the fan translation its as simple as moving files onto your sd card! Note that the actual content of the hack remains the same. Installation instructions have been changed to use LayeredFS instead of Hans.
