I went to play a Japanese game on an NTSC console and it works perfectly, but when I go to save the game with NMM, it says it must format the card to the Japan region. It will successfully format to the correct region, but when I try and save again, it will once again ask to format to the Japan region.

Any help?

Maybe that game is not working with NMM.
Some games are incompatible for few reasons, with different results (freeze, save but doesn't load, etc.)

Did you checked a compatibility list, or other user's report and see which settings or loader version they used?

According to the DIOS MIOS compatibility list, saving has not been tested.
The DIOS MIOS Lite compatibility list says saving was broken on r39.
I'm using DIOS MIOS. Does the compatibility change depending on whether I'm using Lite or not?

NTSC is a television standard, not a region, and indeed, Japan uses NTSC as well, so from context I assume you meant an American console.

Anyway, I forget exactly how NMM works, but you can't save Japanese and American games on the same memory card. This is true of real physical memory cards, and may be what is causing issues for you. Try to delete your NMM (BACK IT UP FIRST) and make a new one. Only use that with Japanese saves and see what happens.

Again, I don't guarantee this works, I don't know, but it's something to try.

NMM is not really a memory card emulation.
It's saving the game's save data directly as files, instead of using the card or an image of the card as binary container.

Each game has its own files and don't share them with others, and there's no memory card format (the format is FAT32, as it's stored directly on SD or USB)
That's why some games doesn't save correctly (Mario Kart Double Dash uses characters for the filename which is incompatible with FAT filesystem, so it saves but can't open it as the filename is corrupted).

Maybe that's the case here, it's trying to save the files with filename in ShiftJis, or Euc, or anything using a double char, but it doesn't save correctly on FAT?

it would require an USB gecko to check what happens when you save and compare the logged filename with the one stored on your SD or USB.

That's why Nintendont is now using a binary image of the memory card instead of NMM.

Yeah that's what I meant. Guess I wrote it too fast.

It seems to save as stats.bin and a DONKEY KONGA 3 SAVEDATA file.

The filename doesn't seem to be the problem here. it's standard ASCII.
Sorry, I don't know why you have this issue.
And Nintendont doesn't seem to work with this game (compatibility list tested with v1.21), You'll have to wait for a fix

  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
