Hacking diodes for wab modcheap

What type of diodes do I need to get to build the cable for the WAB Modcheap? (a part # from radioshack would be helpful)?

How important is diodes? I removed mine in my quest for sync, but when i was still getting lots of sync errors i found out that it works perfectly even with sync errors. Should i put the diodes back on?

i was having sync issues because my cable was too long, so i made it 1/4 (now no longer than 40cm from dvd drive to my LPT port) the length and now works without any diodes or capacitors (never used them anyways)
