Chinese company Tencent announces new streaming console

Tencent, the Chinese company which owns Riot Games, has announced a new PC-console hybrid in the form of the Tencent Games Platform. It supposedly will run on a sixth-generation Intel chip, and its architecture will be based on Windows 10. In "TGP Box Mode", it downloads or streams PC games directly to the console. It is unknown how much it will cost, or if it is ever coming to the West, but it's an interesting foray into the game streaming industry.

I'm curious as to the differences between this and the similar products on the market. Surely there has to be something.
I am as well because we only have a few tech specs at this point. Although I think the true streaming element is what is supposed to be the kicker here. I don't know if there's another popular streaming console on the market.

But what's the point of streaming the games anyway? It's not like the Nvidia Shield where at least you have portability. It's no different than a second PC at this point.

I can't think of very many reasons either. Maybe if your PC is too far away from your TV you might want to stream it?

Personally I just need a HDMI cord and I can do basically anything I want.

I'm reminded of OnLive.
OnLive had you streaming the video from a server hundreds/thousands of miles away (iirc). With this, you'll probably be streaming from a couple dozen feet away at most.

Exactly. A 50' HDMI cable costs less than this...

in china not many people have dedicated games devices/consoles, most people play games on their phones.
not saying this thing will be popular in china, but, i'm certain it will be more popular there than comparing it to hypothetically coming to the west, where one could argue that games consoles are already in basically every house.

not so many games are even in chinese. vita has quite a lot though, so the situation definately is changing. many vita games are translated from japanese to chinese first.
isn't nintendo even translating pokemon sun and moon into chinese too?
once you get past the piracy, china is great for companies because there are so many people, so it makes sense that this streaming console thing is trying to get in before the big ms/nintendo/sony try even harder and put more money into the chinese market. (my opinion at least)

-- but the fact this is for pc games is a bit weird... :)

In China, even android box that connected to TV can be a "gaming console". Should not expect any creative idea from tencent. Like the name, tencent is cheap.

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb

    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.

Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
