Lets not forget Square Enix make more than just final fantasy games.
I wanna see Chrono, Black Mage, A mech out of Front Mission, A Rep from Star Ocean, another maybe from the SaGa series, blue slime, musashi, one of the dragons from Drakengard, (Space Invader? and possibly other Taito characters?), Chocobo, Kage, Neku, The Master, Moogle (preferrably Mog from FF6), someone from Ehrgeiz, Aya Brea, maybe dig some more characters up from their old nes and snes catalogue too!
Depending on how the fighting system would be, a crossover might be alright.
The fact is there's still very little in diversity between their characters. All are similar stylized (they either look like Dragon Quest characters or Final Fantasy characters, outside of a few rare exceptions) and have nothing on the Capcom library. And a lot of them are quite forgettable since they don't have much in the ways of sequels. It's usually one protagonist per game and not much in the way of a continuing story for one single protagonist. With Capcom characters, there's tons of diversity. Viewtiful Joe is super stylized and awesome. Frank West is an average Joe with some serious zombie slaying skills. Leon Kennedy is a badass American agent. Zero is a super robot. Chun Li is a sexy street fighter. That's a line-up to top, and Square Enix can't deliver it. If anything, it'd just provide fanboy service so kids can wet themselves because Sora and Cloud will be in a video game.
