How was this bug found? Did someone just decide to start bridging components of the Switch until something happened?

Most devices of this kind of complexity will have a debug/recovery/program mode. Such things are typically sought out by hackers as they have a long history of being able to do cool things.
I don't know what they would have read or seen (I imagine repair locations have something like this so someone might have sent some pictures) to find this, or if they had a dump of the boot code from something else (which is not likely to be very big, and being a debug/recovery thing will probably be right at the start of the code as well).

Oh. Sounds like something that would be hard without prior knowledge of where to look for these types of things.

I wonder if right joycons will now spike in price, while left joycons will be able to be had for next to nothing.. ;)

Ah - the wonders of a market economy.. ;)

I ordered 3 on ebay for $4 shipped. If this doesn't work out I'll just buy a R joycon and solder the points together. I guess alternately you can use wire glue with a fine tip.
Can someone help me with the "Micro USB connector" ? Is this that small adapter from micro-USB to USB-c that comes with the galaxy s8? I've ordered a 3D printed one for $ 0,75

So, are there limitations on using Linux? Can you play games? Anything like that?

EDIT: Sorry, not on topic to the thread.

Lol. Literally I was in 3 GAME stores in UK asking for Right JoyCon only and they said that there is only Left left, or pair for 69 GBP. It's happening already.

they need to have a strong line up on the launch titles too. I think they should move metroid prime 4 to the next console because by now it has been quite a while and there's no release date scheduled yet

well as far as metroid prime 4 is concerned, the next system probably is similar enough to the current gen they can probably easily just slap it onto a next gen cart and call it good :P
