Why doesnt he ask one of his teachers? Since he needs it for his studie.
Or, get a book about it in the library, or use, this is a very special tip I don't give just to anyone, but you could try to use this.

I wanna know what school he goes to that requires them to use a 3000 dollar 3d modeling program? At any rate, there are lots of good tutorials for Maya available on line.

well, there is a draw for the studie and he doesn't know if he will be selected yet.
so if he doesn't get picked, he wants to do some work and learn how to use the program.

I don't know the name of the studie, but it has to do with game design and the making of 3D models and stuff.
