Can Gamecube discs be played on the Wii U? What about Gamecube pad>USB port controller support?

I've yet to get a Wii U. When I get one, I was planning on keeping my Wii for my Gamecube games but if there is a softmod that allows Gamecube DISCS to be used on the Wii U, I could clear some space when I get a Wii U and get rid of my old Wii.

Also, I'm aware that you can buy an adaptor to use a Gamecube pad on your PC via USB, so by that logic would it be possible to use a Gamecube pad on the Wii U via USB? Using the Classic controller or whatever wouldn't be the same as the actual Gamecube pad so I'm hoping that this can be done.

    Use devolution.
You must own the discs (you only need them once), and you must have a gcn compatible wii. You would plug in your HDD, run cleanrip on the wii, insert disc, and rip the game. Then go to the root of your HDD and drag the three files you get for the gcn game you just ripped to a /games directory. Then run devolution with the gcn disc REMOVED. Select the game, and then after the disc drive starts blinking, insert the gcn game. Wait about 20 seconds and the game will load, and you should be all set. You plug in your HDD to your Wii U (Make sure to have a y cable for it) and launch devolution, then pick the game and it will run.

The only thing is you must use the same wii controller that you used on the wii when you ran devolution the first time. this is so it knows that you backed up your own game and you own(ed) it because it reads the wii remote data or something like that

finally, not sure if this will work, I dont see why it wouldn't, but you can get a mayflash adapter for GCN -> Wii remote here http://www.amazon.com/Mayflash-Nintendo-GameCube-Controller-Adapter-Wii/dp/B00BS520SG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1393120143&sr=8-1&keywords=gamecube to wii u adapter

    Thanks for replying. :)

Just to check that I understand properly:

    1) I don't actually play the games via disc, I play them via ripped images on the hard drive?

    2) I need a Wii to rip the games initially? Meaning that if something goes wrong down the line and I don't have a Wii to re-rip the games, I'm screwed?

Yes, you must have the original discs and have a Wii (that works with GCN games) to rip them. This process is only done once, after you rip them to your HDD you don't need them anymore, and they can run off of the Wii U as long as you are using the same Wii controller you used when loading Devolution on the wii.

And yes, if you don't have access to a Wii and say your HDD crashes, then you're screwed until you can rip those games again. (You may be able to back them up on a computer and maybe they will still run if you put them on a new HDD while still using the same Wii remote, but I am not sure)

what do you mean "as long as you are using the same wii controller" does the DRM in devolution lock the rips to some code on the wiimote? if so then what happens if the wiimote breaks ?
and i though there was a bypass for devolution DRM

The Wii U's optical drive is physically incompatible with mini-DVD gamecube disks. Even if there were some way to hack the firmware of the optical drive to read Gamecube disks, you would still need an adapter. I believe all the Wii's have gamecube compatible drives, even the ones which do not support gamecube play.

I do not know exactly how it all works but yes, it uses the same data from the wii remote in order to determine you actually ripped the game and didn't download it from the internet. Its just an anti piracy protection

I'm not sure about the disc drives being the same. I know my black wii can't read data DVDs, but I haven't tried using it with a gamecube disc. Also, if you sync 4 controllers during the verification, you can use any of the 4 with booting up a game in devolution.

    I'm talking about two things:

    1) The ability of the drive's components to physically read the disk.

    2) The ability of the drive's firmware to physically read the disk.

I'm not sure about how the optical drive works in the non Gamecube compatible Wii's. I know that the Wii U has a disk drive where the components are physically incapable of reading Gamecube disks. Even if you could get software and firmware that were compatible, it will not accept the disks because of how the drive is engineered.

Just curious - are you saying that no US black Wiis have Gamecube controller ports?

    Black has both styles.
All red Wiis play Gamecube, the blue Wiis do not.

I was also thinking of getting a (brand new) replacement black Wii you see, but it has to have Gamecube ports. No luck finding one.

The WiiU doesn't have a MIOS so even with modifications to your console it still wont work

You guys aren't even mentioning Nintendont as a substitute for Devolution:glare:

Just wondering how well Nintendont is working at this point?

I never used Devolution in the past on my old Wii, but after wanting to play StarFox Adventures again, I decided to set it up on WiiU. I ripped about 20 of my old GC games to a 32GB SD card and I must say Devolution is awesome. Nearly 100% compatible, multiple controller options including Classic, Classic pro, WiiU Pro, and PS3 and GC with the Mayfly adapter

The Upscaling looks fantastic especially with games that supported progressive and 16x9. I swear StarFox Adventures looks as good as some of the Ratchet games on PS3. I found 720p looked bad, but 1080p was sweet (I think it essentially doubles the cube resolution so likely why 720p looks poor).

If Nintendo ever gives us pro controls on the Gamepad, I will be in total heaven.

The setup (rip, run, pair with wiimote) is a bit of a hassle but once its done then no problem. Also, I don't think you can move your content from one device to another (usb to sd or other usb). You pretty much need to run them from the media you ripped and verified them to. I may be wrong on that, but that's what the info file says.

How many WiiMotes have you ever had die? Me none in what 7+ years of using a Wii. I don't think Devolution actually stores anything on the WiiMote....I think it just uses it as a key....I think it somehow pulls serialization info off the WiiMote and stores that in the verifying file. If you are paranoid then sync multiple WiiMotes and also if you setup your stuff on an SD you could use win32diskimager to make a raw image of your SD card and then if you ever have troubles just dump the raw image back out.....

You can use Devolution (and maybe Nintendont?) with loaders so WiiFlow and USB GX both support GC images and Devolution which makes for a nicer launch interface than the very basic Devo one.

So I give Devolution a ringing endorsement if you own your games, if you are in the USA, used GC games are dirt cheap. I get them all the time for under $10 a game both from shops like Disc Replay and from Ebay. I just got Sphinx and SSX3 for $4 each yesterday. Cube classics are holding up really well.

Now back to DKTF.........excellent game if you dig frustrating old school platformers (which I do).

Huh, nintendont is compatible with more games than I thought. Though for most, you'd have to use devolution for now. The problem is, devolution is most useful for running GC games on non-BC Wiis or Wii-U's, but you need a BC Wii to make it work...

    Question...

My Wii is from launch date (it still works perfectly) and HAS a drive mod, meaning i can use GC mini dvds copies (i had my GC hacked as well).

Can i rip these mini dvds that i burned and use them in Devolution on my WiiU?

Does anyone have a proper link for a guide in HOW to do the entire process? I would appreciate if someone can help me. I am going to hack my Wii U (well the vWii) this weekend and would love to do everything on the same day :P

    Thanks

Nope.............can't use 'backups' with devolution it has to be originals. It is a pain in the ass, but I guess I appreciate the creators commitment to not providing a 'pirate' launcher.

Do a search on this forum for Devolution and you will find a guide and links. You will also need to get the homebrew forwarder that launches homebrew channel in 16x9. I would make sure to update your WiiU to the latest system update (4.03) before doing your vWii hack. Again follow the guides on this forum and make sure to use the hack pack with the IOS files known to be safe with WiiU. Also make sure to only use forwarders designed for WiiU. A hacked vWii is amazing in that if you do that you can pretty much have every generation of Nintendo games on one console. (NES-N64 with VC, GC with Devolution, and WiiU). It takes about 9min a disc to rip the GC discs. I pretty much did my entire library of 20+ games in a day.
