Finally got everything in order to try this...

Did the following:

1) Format your SD card to FAT16. Copy the contents inside the sd folder to the root of your SD card

2) Insert the SD card in the Wii and go to Data Management>Channels>SD Card press YES on the dialog box that asks to load boot.dol

3) Install the Homebrew Channel and install BootMii as boot2 if possible or as an IOS if boot2 is not available.

4) Launch Bootmii (if you installed to boot2 just reset the system if you installed to IOS go to the HBC and press the Home button)

5) Open the config menu (gears) and choose backup NAND (green arrow) wait for it to finish and restart the Wii

I did the first 3 steps w/ no problem.. Installed HBC and installed BootMii as "boot2".. Didn't know what to do after that so just held the power button on my remote to shut down and then turn it back on with my WiiMote... It came back up to the BootMii menu but my WiiMote doesn't work.. I press a button and all the lights just light up but doesn't connect to the console..

What'd I do wrong?

EDIT: Sorry... You need to use a GC controller or the actual power/reset/eject buttons on the Wii (for those that don't know).

Another question..

I went on to step 6:

6) Run Trucha Bug Restorer and choose "IOS36" and pick "Downgrade IOS15" and "Download IOS from NUS" then restart

When I ran that it brought up "This application can brick you Wii,...." So I got scared and stopped there.. Do I need this to run backups from a USB HDD?

Also, you posted "You can't run IOS downgrader and cIOS downgrader on those Wii's and it isn't necessary either way." Is this what you were referring to? Being that my Wii is older that I can't (and don't have to) run the IOS downgrader? Is that this step?

The Trucha Bug Restorer is safe to use, but only use it if you're on a FW higher than 3.3.

By saying IOS and cIOS downgrader i was referring to using IOS and cIOS downgrader. The downgrading with the Trucha Bug Restorer is safe for any type of Wii.

If you are on 4.0/4.1 without any cIOS, yes you need to do that in order to get the trucha bug.

Comparing the above post to this (which is a little more detailed walk through): How to Store/Load Wii Games via USB...

Being that his walkthrough is for a 4.0 Wii and if I upgrade to the latest (4.1, right?) would the process still be the same?

Thanks much!

Don't follow that mikeandeath guide. It involves downgrading IOS35 which is no longer a safe method of getting cIOS installed on new Wii's. The Trucha Bug Restorer is a MUCH safer method as it works on any type of Wii of any firmware (except FW's less than 3.3 where you wouldn't need it anyways since you would already have the trucha bug in all IOS's).

What if I've already gone through the IOS35 downgrade, etc.? Is there a way (short of Bootmii NAND restore) to get IOS35 back to standard?

The IOS35 downgrade doesn't kill the IOS on older Wii's. It's only if you have an LU64+/boot2v4 type Wii that it does. If you did it and everything worked, then you don't need to worry about it.
