you can, but all might not play properly. also, never run an update from a NTSC game disc/iso. It could brick your wii.

try to find pal ones when there is a pal version of a game.

BTW, kitten doing pushups=awesome.

Thanks for this excellent guide :-) I have an older Wii (I think firmware 4.0u, confirmed) and I decided to give this a shot after having owned it for so long..

I followed your steps exactly but I have problem.

When I try to use the Custom IOS Installer 2.0 I install version IOS38 using the network install but i then get an error message:

"Installing Customer IOS, please wait...
>> Install ERROR! (ret = -2011)

Finishing installation, please wait...OK!"

What can I try to resolve this error?

EDIT: I just tried download IOS38-64-v3610.wad and installing it from SD Card, I get the same error message.

I'm pretty sure that involves downgrading IOS35 and he has a new Wii so no that is definitely not worth trying and shouldn't be done at all.

Do this with the Trucha Bug Restorer:

Then run the rev14 installer again and use IOS36 and do a wad installation after putting that IOS38 wad in the root of your sd card.

Depends what you try doing. Don't do anything that involves downgrading besides the Trucha Bug Restorers method of downgrading IOS15. Don't try to install older IOS's on your system. Don't uninstall things unless you're absolutely sure you can and should.

Just use the Trucha Bug Restorer as the video shows so you have the trucha bug on IOS36, then run the cIOS rev14 installer using IOS36 (as it needs the trucha bug to install it to IOS249). After that you can use dop-IOS to install the most recent IOS60 with sig hash check so you can load vc wads from the sd card menu.

Once you do that you can use wad manager 1.4 using IOS249 to install any vc wads and backup loader channels and whatnot. (Don't move the HBC to the sd card menu though.)

You can also use any backup loader/usb loader with that cIOS as well. Neogamma R6 is good for disc based loading and USB Loader GX is a solid usb loader.

This thread is great!

Few questions of my own...

1. I just traded for a stock 3.3U Wii (LU301.... serial).. Should I bother updating to the latest update or will the steps posted work fine for me?

2. So it's possible to get Homebrew installed, play ISO's off USB drive, etc without even softmodding (ie: TP hack)?

3. All I want to do is play ISO's off a USB HDD.. If I have a stock Wii and follow the steps posted, I should be able to do this, yes?

Thanks much!!

So I need a seperate IOS to play wads from the SD Menu?

But apart from that is CIOS38 rev14 the only one I need for using wads and wii loaders from the wii system memory?

Also, does it make a difference that my console is PAL in this process? Like will installing all this stuff still work?

Yes.

Yes.

No, doesn't matter for this process. Don't install updates etc from different regions games and your fine. None of these hacks relate to region however. Banner bomb, tbr, cios install etc.

1 - I would update to the latest, and then preform the steps. Might as well get it out of the way now.
2. The twilight hack has been replaced by banner bomb. It's nice and easy, but you are soft modding with it.
3. Yes.

omg, I just found another guide - and that says I'll need to use the trucha to downgrade the IOS and all sorts,

and my Wii serial starts with LEH51 which is apparently the PAL equivalent of LU64, meaning my Wii is basically very problematic or something?

I might just give up, this is so confusing, I seriously cannot afford to brick this Wii :|

It only seems like a lot of work before you get started. If your goal is to play backups:

Install banner bomb, use tbr to restore the trucha bug, install cios, play with your backup launcher.

The lu64+ issues are mostly a thing of the past. As you can see there's helpful people around here. We understand that you are trying to be safe and are concerned with the life of your wii

That's a great way to approach it. It makes you work a bit more to get the knowledge. But don't be too put off. An answer is only a post away!

But it still seems so confusing :| There is no guide that explans this in simple terms.

And I don't understand what I have to do with the Trucha thing, and it seems really dangerous.

Perhaps get some of those steps off the list. Using banner bomb and getting the homebrew channel is REALLY easy and safe. From there you can figure out how to load things from it. You can try emulators and other homebrew to get a feel for it with no danger. That way you'll feel you've made some progress. From there, you can take on TBR, and once that's done, you can install the cios and be off with backup launchers.

As with TBR, it IS a little scary, so yes I can understand that. But it was designed to be as safe as possible.

That step IS layed out in understandable terms here:
QUOTE(Deviyl @ Jul 20 2009, 07:06 PM) Steps:
  • Extract the files from the downloaded Trucha Bug Restorer zip.
  • Copy the TBR folder to the apps folder on your SD card.
  • Start HBC
  • Load TBR
  • Use IOS 36 to downgrade 15.
