Im just curious on how the hell we burn the games.
I read on IRC that perhaps we have to remove the splitvid, and that the new function called LT-MAX will emulate it somehow.

Anyway, it´s excellent news for all of us who rather create a backup on our own games and avoid damaging the original DVD.

good to hear, to bad my DL burner crapped out on me a week ago.
burns cd's and dvd's fine but wont set L0 data on dual layers....
not only that the tube in my big TV exploded so now i have to find a new/used tv for cheap so no extra money to throw around on a new burner.

Wow the NFO for Gears_of_War_3_READNFO_XGD3_0800_USA_RF-XBOX360-RRoD doesn't make it seem hard at all I just hope I won't need multiple burns if it writes the wrong data in.

NFOs and the picture mentioned within them to save others looking. Gears 3 then Rise of nightmares and finally the picture.
The NFO details it but it seems the fix is a combination of tweaked layer break and ignoring part of the disc data (hence this only works on games without content checks on the disc- some of you might have burned discs with errors in the past and had parts work before disc read errors which is a similar idea). Not live safe in the slightest but better games than not. Not sure where optical drive emulators will end up here with regards to being safe for live and XGD3 compatible.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ XGD3 BACKUPS OVERVIEW

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ To end the confusion once and for all, *yes*, original XGD3 discs
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ have a higher linear/track density and therefore a higher physical
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ capacity than XGD2 and regular DVD+R DL media. As a result, XGD3 ISO
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ backups are larger as well.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ For XGD3 backup support, c4eva has introduced in LT+ v2.0 the LT-MAX
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ feature, which allows for XGD3 backups to use the maximum possible
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ layerbreak for regular DVD+R DL media, and therefore all of the
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ available space (8,547,991,552 bytes) of a regular DVD+R DL disc.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Since there is still not enough space on a regular DVD+R DL disc to
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ hold the entire XGD3 game partition, not to mention the Layer 1
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Video partition, this is not at all recommended as being "safe" for
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Xbox LIVE.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ XGD3 backups will still boot and play fine on LT+ v2.0 as long as the
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ last approximately 1.7% of the game partition does not contain any of
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ the actual game assets, which it usually won't because the end of the
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ game partition is near the inner edge of the disc, and developers
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ will try to keep their game data near the outer edge (middle of the
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ game partition) to maximize read performance.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Another necessary condition to booting and playing XGD3 backups on
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ regular DVD+R DL media is that the kernel or game code itself must
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ not perform any CIV (Content Integrity Verification) checks on any
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ part of this last approximately 1.7% of the game partition (or at
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ least it must not take any action after CIV failures). Even if there
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ are no actual game assets in this area, there is still pseudo-random
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ padding data which can be checked through CIV, and such checks can
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ even be added later to the game code through title updates, or to the
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ kernel through system updates.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Just like XGD2, XGD3 backups still require the correct dashboard
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ version-specific AP2.5 replay data. As they've done previously, MS
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ has the ability to change the DAE.bin by way of a system update,
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ meaning you may need to re-patch/re-burn at some point. The abgx360
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ application and database will be updated accordingly to support XGD3.


ÂÂÂÂÂÂ BEST PRACTICES AND SETTINGS

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ The P2P XGD3 ISO rips that were floating around before this point are
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ for ODDEs and are not compatible as-is with LT+ v2.0. Their PFI, DMI
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ and SS sectors are in the wrong PSN (Physical Sector Number)
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ locations and they are missing the critical AP2.5 replay sector and
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ SS replay table. If you intend to play XGD3 backups on a firmware-
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ flashed 360, it's up to you to make sure you're using proper ISOs
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ made with 0800 v3.0, and to double-check by running them through
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ abgx360 before burning.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Keep in mind that this is the first of several potential disc-based
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ backup solutions for XGD3. As such, it's recommened that all
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ subsequent releases maintain the full ISO size and associated
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ layerbreak (2133520) in the .dvd, which will help to ensure that they
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ will be forward-compatible should any media manufacturers step up
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ with new larger-capacity discs (which will be necessary in order to
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ make XGD3 backups as safe as possible on Xbox LIVE).

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ The actual layerbreak for XGD3 ISOs is 2133520. However, when burning
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ XGD3 ISOs to regular DVD+R DL, ImgBurn will automatically reposition/
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ limit the layerbreak to 2086912 in accordance with the disc's maximum
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Layer 0 data zone capacity (2,086,912 [LBA: 0 - 2086911]). The LT-MAX
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ feature in LT+ v2.0 will compensate for this and allow you to play
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ XGD3 backups with this wrong layerbreak, and therefore wrong game
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ partition data PSN locations.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ In the case of growisofs as instructed below, in order to avoid
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ errors when burning XGD3 to regular DVD+R DL, you may choose to first
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ truncate the ISO to 8,547,991,552 bytes, and burn using a reduced
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ associated layerbreak of 2086912. This should give you exactly the
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ same end result as if you followed the instructions below for ImgBurn
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ on Windows.


ÂÂÂÂÂÂ INSTRUCTIONS FOR BURNING XGD3 BACKUPS WITH IMGBURN

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ We recommended that you use the latest version of ImgBurn (v2.5.5.0
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ at the time of writing, downloadable at
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download). Older versions may
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ handle this process differently and/or give a different set of
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ errors.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Although it is set by default in ImgBurn, please ensure that under
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Tools > Settings > Write, you have "Layer Break (For DL Media)" set
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ to "Calculate Optimal".

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Please ensure that the layerbreak is set as 2133520 in the .dvd file.
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ If you already have the XGD2 (or other) layerbreak value set in
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ ImgBurn, the .dvd of the XGD3 ISO will override that setting and use
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ the proper layerbreak.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ As mentioned above, ImgBurn will automatically reposition/limit the
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ layerbreak to 2086912 when burning to regular DVD+R DL discs.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Step by Step:

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ 1. Choose "Write image file to disc", and after loading the .dvd
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ file, click "Write".

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ 2. ImgBurn will pop up a notice saying that there is not enough
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ space on the disc to burn the image, and asks if you would like to
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ continue anyway. Click "Yes".

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ 3. Another message might pop up saying that optimal layerbreak
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ position exceeds L0 capacity. Click "Yes".

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ 4. An error will then pop up noting that "Set L0 Data Zone
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Capacity Failed". Click "Continue".

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ 5. The image will begin writing to the disc.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ 6. Nearing the end of the write process, ImgBurn will pop up an
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ error at around 97% or 98% (this is what we want -- it's
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ intentional!). Click "Cancel".

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ 7. A notice will then pop up asking if you would like ImgBurn to
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ try and perform the "'Close Track/Session/Disc' functions". Click

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ In the case of growisofs as instructed below, in order to avoid
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ errors when burning XGD3 to regular DVD+R DL, you may choose to first
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ truncate the ISO to 8,547,991,552 bytes, and burn using a reduced
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ associated layerbreak of 2086912. This should give you exactly the
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ same end result as if you followed the instructions below for ImgBurn
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ on Windows.


ÂÂÂÂÂÂ INSTRUCTIONS FOR BURNING XGD3 BACKUPS WITH IMGBURN

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ We recommended that you use the latest version of ImgBurn (v2.5.5.0
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ at the time of writing, downloadable at
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download). Older versions may
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ handle this process differently and/or give a different set of
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ errors.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Although it is set by default in ImgBurn, please ensure that under
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Tools > Settings > Write, you have "Layer Break (For DL Media)" set
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ to "Calculate Optimal".

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Please ensure that the layerbreak is set as 2133520 in the .dvd file.
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ If you already have the XGD2 (or other) layerbreak value set in
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ ImgBurn, the .dvd of the XGD3 ISO will override that setting and use
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ the proper layerbreak.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ As mentioned above, ImgBurn will automatically reposition/limit the
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ layerbreak to 2086912 when burning to regular DVD+R DL discs.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Please see the included imgburn-xgd3-errors.png image for screenshots
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ of the errors you'll encounter in ImgBurn and what to click on in
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ each dialog that pops up.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Step by Step:

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ 1. Choose "Write image file to disc", and after loading the .dvd
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ file, click "Write".

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ 2. ImgBurn will pop up a notice saying that there is not enough
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ space on the disc to burn the image, and asks if you would like to
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ continue anyway. Click "Yes".

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ 3. Another message might pop up saying that optimal layerbreak
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ position exceeds L0 capacity. Click "Yes".

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ 4. An error will then pop up noting that "Set L0 Data Zone
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Capacity Failed". Click "Continue".

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ 5. The image will begin writing to the disc.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ 6. Nearing the end of the write process, ImgBurn will pop up an
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ error at around 97% or 98% (this is what we want -- it's
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ intentional!). Click "Cancel".

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ 7. A notice will then pop up asking if you would like ImgBurn to
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ try and perform the "'Close Track/Session/Disc' functions". Click
ÂÂÂÂÂÂ "Yes".

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ 8. Let the disc finalize, and you're done!

Wonder how long it'll be then, until Microsoft updates the kernel to do the content check. Quite amusing that they are not recommend for live use either. When the drive emulators first appeared, lots were putting them down, claiming won't be live safe, wait for c4e etc and now it turns out this solution is not recommend for live.

@Thug4L1f3 it looks like we will burn them pretty much exactly the same as usual (I imagine ABGX360 will be updated to handle this) but pushing through those error messages should they arise.

@Armadillo I imagine then at first at least NXE installs will be in with disc checks as appropriate or failing that the glitch stuff takes off. It does look like the easy ride of the 360 is coming to a close though.

Strange. My copy of L4D2, burned the exact same way. All those errors popped up, but I tried the game out anyway and it worked. Can't wait for LT+ 2.0.

. Have a boxed slim waiting for the glitch hack to get a hacked dash as well, thought I'd get in nice and early just incase they update the hardware to stop/make the glitch harder.

Wonder if the drive emulators will become more common though, if they do start doing checking the discs or throwing more obstacles in the way. Will be interesting for online releases as well. As the drive emu images aren't compatible with lt max and I'd assume the lt max images won't be compatible with them. Will we start getting two releases of everything or possible some sort of optional patch released by groups (missing data + patch or whatever to rebuild into a drive emulator image).
