Best Linux Distro for beginner

I saw it a few posts up and have heard about it before somewhere.
Shame that Canonical have decided to go the corporate-Microsoft-style route to make money when open source/libre should be non-profit.
IIRC that is only on main Unity Ubuntu. MATE for example did not have that spyware.

ok... but whats the difference, from Xubuntu and Ubuntu?
The GUI. Xubuntu is a flavor of Ubuntu with a different GUI as is Lubuntu and Ubuntu GNOME
 
Also they're intended for different purposes and might have other optimisations to help older computers or such or provide a more modern interface.

Mainly this. They just have different design goals

Yeah, which is why I recommend the ubuntu derivatives rather than ubuntu itself.
Same here. IMHO MATE is probably the best if you are coming from Windows as the two are fairly similar to me.

I like MATE, but I use XFCE on pretty much every box, which is why I recommend Xubuntu :P

It's also fairly similar to windows, and I feel is visually nicer than MATE.
