Could someone give me a tl;dr, is it possible/safe to hack in the new villagers into towns yet (W. Link in particular)?

The site's background is back to green and there's no more warning and most of the errors seem to be fixed. But it still says "alpha 4".

Nope...it says "beta 1" for me.
Well, a few minutes ago it still did. But it seems like it's out of alpha and there shouldn't be any major problems any more. Everything I have is listed as the right thing. And setting villagers (including the new ones) to default works perfectly.

so, i really want to test this tool, but i have made so much progress on my town that i would be horrible if i lost it.
i know if i back up the save, then restore it later, i will get a corrupted save alert.
is there any way i can restore a backup of my animal crossing save without getting the corrupt save alert?

Sadly its unknown exactly how can we get our save corrupted. Atleast for me, JKSV corrupted my town everytime i edited it.
You can dump your save , then open the garden_plus.dat on the editor, dont edit the garden_plus.dat and download it, and then re-inject that one. (and dont use JKSV)

i mostly use JKSV for save data edits, so what would be a better save data editor to use? SVDT?

I used to dump saves with save_manager for homebrew launcher, but yesterday after trying to do something with JKSV , save_manager wont inject a save. :'I

i haven't tried svdt tho'. use save_manager, that one never got my town corrupted

AHHHH I'M SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW!! *calms down* Really though, @marc_max you are seriously amazing to do all this in just a few days. Setting villagers to default works, editing acres works, haven't tried maxing any bells on my characters but i'll test it now!

Edit: Maxing bells works, and all of the clothes/items are set to what they should be!

Hey so I see that the editor's been updated to Beta now but when I go to the site I can't do anything?

Edit: Oops nevermind, it's working now for some reason!

does the fairy wand or kiki and lala wand work yet? Also, in alpha 4 anyway, some flooring such as mermaid carpet wont go into a villagers house
