After barely a year, Square Enix is already shutting down its mobile Final Fantasy VII battle royale game

fdss.png

An end-of-service notice has been issued for Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier. The free-to-play battle royale game set as a prequel of sorts to Final Fantasy VII is going permanently offline just a little over a year after its initial launch. Originally released on mobile platforms in November 2021, the game will be shutting down for good on January 11, 2023. According to Square Enix, the reasoning behind this decision is that they "haven't been able to deliver the experience that we were hoping to, and that you all deserve".

In-game purchases have been removed from FF VII: The First Soldier's storefront, but the game will still get regular updates until it shuts down. Support for non-English languages will end on November 1st.

Killed sooner than what I expected. I played it with some friends close to launch and it was pretty meh, I guess most the playerbase must've left soon after.

I don't understand why you would only release something like this on smart devices only. If it was on pc/console and had a bit better marketing it might have survived longer.
Tell that to Nintendo.

They've got Mario Kart Tour on Android/iOS and wouldn't hurt if they'd release it on the Switch. Same goes for Mario Run.

I played it a few times then accidentally deleted it and forgot to reinstall.

It really wasn’t for me but the concept was awesome concept I didn’t get far in.

Had a focus on magic powers and attack you collected throughout the match

And this is why I refuse to get into their live service or cloud-based games that they push out. You literally can't trust that they won't shut down the service or stop supporting it in a year or two.
Dead-on. I dropped their Mana F2P mobile game as soon as I saw “Free” & “Paid” currency. That and the rail-grinding hand-holding tutorial was just too much.

I couldn’t even laugh this time; I’m just annoyed. It’s like the MMO gold-rush of the PS3/X360 era, but at least like… most MMOs are allowed a year of service before shutdown?

"we haven’t been able to milk more money out of you guys deliver the experience that we were hoping to"

we already knew this game would fail hard, the reactions from the very first announcement tell it all.

I knew this existed but I am not interested in playing this on my phone. For handheld gaming I use a handheld console. And most of the people who are playing on mobile won't play this because there is already way bigger titles in the same genre to play. And also, SE did a pretty poor job at marketing this for their target audience. (Which is probably your average teenage boy)

Perhaps if SquareEnix actually listened then they could have ported those Pixel remasters to console and got way more happy gamers. but I guess that would have been too easy money or something..

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.

Nothing special about it other than it's more comfortable than the Lite

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.
  • AncientBoi @ AncientBoi:
    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
