Misc Access eShop with old software?

I'm currently running on 4.1.0.

When accessing the eShop, it says I require a system update. That's where I run away in a mad panic.

1) is it asking me to update the Wii u software to 5.0.0 or the eShop?

2) if the former, is there any way to access the eShop without updating the Wii U software? I'd like to avoid doing so if at all possible.

I only want to claim my free Mario Kart 8 game, so if there are any workarounds please share.

Why? Mainly to keep the choice. I generally don't change things unless I need to (like in this case), especially if there's no way to revert. I guess that makes me a commitment phobe
